Job Overview:

Our Database Reliability Engineering (DBRE) team is part of the Coursera Infrastructure group, which builds and operates the critical data services that power Coursera’s global learning platform. As a newly formed team, DBRE focuses on the reliability, performance, scalability, and cost efficiency of our databases and data-related infrastructure. We partner with product, platform, and infrastructure teams to deliver resilient, secure, and high-performing data systems, supporting everything from real-time learning experiences to analytics at scale. From automated backups and disaster recovery to database capacity planning and lifecycle management, we ensure Coursera’s data layer is robust, efficient, and ready to meet the needs of millions of learners and partners. We are hiring an Engineering Manager for the DBRE team based in India to lead efforts on RDS, DynamoDB, OpenSearch, ElastiCache, and Kafka/MSK, driving initiatives such as database migrations, building paved paths for supported databases, and capacity optimization. Joining DBRE means working on high-impact projects that keep Coursera’s data foundation strong, scalable, and cost-effective.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the DBRE team that owns developer experience, reliability, and performance of online databases & related services
  • Manage the DBRE team’s strategy and execution on monitoring, backups, restores, upgrades, and scaling
  • Ensure database capacity planning, security, and compliance are met without gaps.
  • Lead on-call for database incidents and ensure fast resolution with thorough postmortems.
  • Serve as the center of excellence for database guidance, best practices, and standards.
  • Coordinate with engineering and product teams on data migrations and high-impact changes.
  • Maintain tested disaster recovery processes and accurate operational documentation.

Basic Qualifications:

  • 2+ years of experience managing or leading engineering teams, preferably in Database Reliability, Site Reliability, DevOps, or Backend Engineering
  • Strong hands-on background with relational and NoSQL databases (e.g., RDS/Aurora, DynamoDB, OpenSearch, ElastiCache, Kafka/MSK)
  • Experience with at least one major cloud platform (e.g., AWS, GCP, Azure)
  • Proficiency with monitoring and observability tools (e.g., Datadog, CloudWatch, Grafana, Sumo Logic)
  • Familiarity with Infrastructure as Code (e.g., Terraform, Ansible) and automation best practices
  • Ability to guide teams to be the center of excellence for database reliability and scaling

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with incident management processes and tools (e.g., PagerDuty)
  • Familiarity with containerized infrastructure (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes)
  • Proven track record in driving cost visibility and optimization for cloud-based database systems
  • Knowledge of version control systems (e.g., Git) and CI/CD best practices
  • Experience leading or contributing to disaster recovery planning and multi-region database architecture
  • Understanding of security and compliance requirements, including audit logging and access controls
  • Familiarity with AI coding assistants and agentic workflows to accelerate engineering productivity
