Sr. SQL DBA
COHO Technology Solutions is seeking a Sr. SQL DBA who will support our customer at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard by providing expert-level database administration, performance tuning, and maintenance of mission-critical SQL Server environments. This position ensures the stability, security, and efficiency of databases that support core program functions and government objectives. The DBA plays a key role in database architecture, disaster recovery planning, and implementing best practices to meet program performance and compliance requirements.
Responsibilities (include but are not limited to):

Administer, configure, and maintain SQL Server databases in development, test, and production environments

Monitor system performance and identify, troubleshoot, and resolve database-related issues

Perform database tuning, index optimization, and query optimization for high-performance systems

Plan and implement backup, recovery, high availability, and disaster recovery strategies

Design and implement database architecture, schema changes, and stored procedures

Automate routine DBA tasks using PowerShell or other scripting tools

Maintain database security and user access controls in accordance with compliance policies

Support application development teams with database-related tasks, including schema design and SQL code reviews

Perform regular audits and capacity planning

Document database configurations, procedures, and system changes
Essential Job Requirements:

- Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field preferred
- Experience:
- 7+ years of experience as a SQL Server DBA in enterprise or government environments, with a proven track record in high-availability systems and performance-critical applications
- Expert knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server (2016 and newer preferred)
- Strong experience with performance tuning, query optimization, and index strategies
- Deep understanding of database security, backup/recovery strategies, and disaster recovery solutions (e.g., Always On, Log Shipping)
- Proficiency in T-SQL, PowerShell, and SSIS/SSRS
- Familiarity with cloud database environments (e.g., Azure SQL Database) is a plus
- Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and ability to work independently
- Strong communication and collaboration skills to work with developers, system admins, and leadership
