Network Security Engineer
Copper River Enterprise Services is seeking a skilled Network Security Engineer to support network infrastructure operations in Newport, Rhode Island. This role is responsible for designing, implementing, securing, and maintaining network systems across classified and unclassified environments. The Network Security Engineer will ensure network performance, security compliance, and operational continuity through proactive monitoring, troubleshooting, and system optimization.
Responsibilities (include but are not limited to):
- Provide network engineering support including requirements analysis, system design, integration, testing, and certification
- Install, terminate, repair, test, and maintain network cabling infrastructure, including:
- Ethernet, copper, coaxial, and fiber optic cabling (including inter-building fiber plant)
- Install, configure, troubleshoot, and maintain network devices, including:
- Routers, switches, firewalls, VPNs, and wireless systems
- Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS), Wireless IDS (WIDS), and fiber optic intrusion detection systems
- Cryptographic equipment and keying material
- Network security systems and appliances
- Perform system administration for network applications, monitoring tools, and management servers
- Configure and maintain network devices in accordance with applicable security and operational requirements
- Monitor and analyze network performance, including:
- User activity logs, system alerts, and network traffic trends
- Firewall, IDS/WIDS, and intrusion detection alerts
- Manage and operate the Network Operations Center (NOC), Secure Network Management Center (SNMC), and network help desk
- Activate, deactivate, and relocate network users and equipment; manage and close tickets using government tracking systems
- Coordinate planned outages, upgrades, and maintenance activities with network users
- Develop detailed incident reports, including root cause analysis and recommendations for prevention
- Maintain system documentation, including:
- Network diagrams and topology maps
- Maintenance and repair logs
- IP address management databases
- Host Based Security System (HBSS) records
- Track and document all network and system changes for configuration control and compliance
Essential Job Qualifications and Requirements:
- Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Cybersecurity, or related field (or equivalent experience)
- Certifications
- Required: Industry-recognized certifications supporting network and security operations (e.g., Security+, Network+, CCNA, CISSP, or equivalent)
- Must meet certification requirements for supporting classified and unclassified network environments
- Experience
- Demonstrated experience in network engineering and security operations
- Hands-on experience with network infrastructure, security tools, and monitoring systems
- Experience working in a Network Operations Center (NOC) or similar environment preferred
