JOB SUMMARY
The Senior Structural Engineer position is responsible for the technical review of construction documents related to residential, multifamily, commercial, industrial, and other structures. Review drawings, calculations, soils reports and other documents for conformance with the requirements of the California Building Standards Codes and Referenced Standards. Use engineering judgement to assess the adequacy of a design to address life-safety and/or the structural design. This position has a thorough knowledge of construction design/inspection and plan review protocols, policies, and procedures.
We only consider candidates living locally or within the State of CA. We do not pay any relocation expenses.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Demonstrate a strong understanding of the California Building Standards Code and the Referenced Standards.
- Conduct comprehensive technical reviews of construction documents for all building types (residential, multifamily, commercial, industrial, and other structural projects).
- Evaluate drawings, structural calculations, geotechnical/soils reports, and related documents for compliance with the applicable codes and standards.
- Apply engineering judgment to assess structural integrity and life-safety aspects of proposed designs.
- Possess in-depth knowledge of construction inspection, plan review procedures, and departmental policies.
- Accurately interpret and review construction drawings, specifications, and calculations to ensure code compliance.
- Understand and evaluate interdisciplinary coordination, plan development, and compose clear, effective plan check correction notices.
- Interpret code requirements accurately and exercise sound judgment in their application.
- Propose acceptable alternative methods and materials that meet code intent and performance criteria.
- Supervise, mentor, and support structural engineers and plan review staff.
- Prepare and present clear, concise, and technically accurate oral and written reports.
- Develop proficiency in electronic plan check systems and utilize applicable software tools for document review and management.
- Foster and maintain effective working relationships with government agencies, developers, architects, engineers, contractors, and the public.
- Represent the department at internal and external meetings, upholding the integrity of both CSG and its client jurisdictions.
- Serve as a liaison between the plan check team and jurisdictional staff to ensure efficient processing of permit applications.
- Stay informed of current trends, code updates, and legal developments related to building construction and structural safety.
- Act independently as a subject matter expert in specialized code areas, rules, and policies.
- Actively pursue and maintain relevant ICC certifications related to job functions.
- Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
- 5+ years of structural design experience in conformance to the California Building Standards Codes and Referenced Standards. Previous plan review experience is desired but not required.
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an accredited college or university.
- Possession of a current SE California License is required.
- Knowledge of principles and practices of engineering as applied to building design and construction.
- International Code Council (ICC) Certifications for Building Plans Examiner is required when providing a complete plan review.
- Competency in, and effective use of computer systems such as: Microsoft Office Suite, Bluebeam & Bluebeam Studios, Microsoft Teams, Zoom, etc. to perform job responsibilities.
- Ability to assume responsibility, interface and communicate effectively with both internal and external customers regardless of the level of technical expertise.
- Ability to remain calm in stressful situations and be flexible and overcome obstacles to complete tasks.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- General office environment.
- Must be able to work productively independently or in a team environment.
- Require walking and bending.
- Capacity to work in a fast-paced environment with deadlines and multiple projects.
- May require visiting work sites and/or clients.
- On as needed basis working at a client office is required.
- Able to lift and carry equipment weighing up to 35 lbs.
- Position regularly requires working in sitting position with computer for extended periods.
Salary Range
$125,000 - $170,000 USD
