What You'll Do
We are seeking a Plumbing Design Engineer to support the design, construction, operational rollout, and maintenance of our commercial kitchen facilities. As part of our vertically integrated engineering team, you will be responsible for the design and development of domestic water, natural gas, sanitary sewer, grease waste, and drainage systems that support our rapidly growing portfolio.
This role combines engineering design, site due diligence, construction support, and innovation. We are looking for engineers who can think beyond standard solutions, challenge conventional approaches, and help develop scalable plumbing systems that can be deployed across hundreds of facilities.
You will work closely with Architecture, Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, Development, Construction, and Operations teams to create efficient, code-compliant, and cost-effective designs.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and coordinate plumbing systems including:
- Hot and cold domestic water systems
- Natural gas distribution systems
- Sanitary sewer and vent systems
- Grease waste and interceptor systems
- Roof drainage systems
- Fire water systems and standpipes
- Pumping systems and water treatment solutions
- Perform facility due diligence to evaluate utility capacity, existing infrastructure, building constraints, and redevelopment opportunities.
- Produce Basis of Design (BOD) packages and schematic design documents to support consultant kickoff and project execution.
- Create and maintain detailed construction documents, prototype facility standards, and engineering details using Revit and related design platforms.
- Review consultant and Engineer of Record (EOR) design packages to ensure alignment with Atoms standards, operational requirements, and cost objectives.
- Size domestic water, gas, grease waste, drainage, and pumping systems in accordance with applicable codes and project requirements.
- Coordinate with AHJs, utility providers, consultants, contractors, and vendors throughout design and construction.
- Support construction teams through permitting, bidding, construction administration, commissioning, and turnover.
- Collaborate with Fire Life Safety teams and support fire sprinkler system layouts and hydraulic calculations when required.
- Drive research and development initiatives focused on reducing construction costs, simplifying installation, improving operational performance, and increasing scalability.

What We're Looking For
- Bachelor of Engineering, Bachelor of Science, or equivalent technical degree in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Plumbing Engineering, Architectural Engineering, Fire Protection Engineering, or a related discipline.
- 5–7 years of relevant experience in plumbing systems design, construction, or commissioning.
- Experience designing:
- Domestic water systems
- Fire water systems
- Natural gas systems
- Standpipe systems
- Sanitary and sewage systems
- Grease waste systems
- Internal and roof drainage systems
- Strong understanding of fluid dynamics, hydraulic calculations, and plumbing system performance.
- Experience sizing grease interceptors, water heaters, gas services, and distribution systems.
- Ability to produce and review construction documentation and engineering calculations.
- Experience working with AHJs, utilities, and permitting agencies.
- Proficiency with Bluebeam and AutoCAD; Revit experience is highly preferred.
- Understanding of commercial building construction and MEP coordination.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to develop creative engineering solutions rather than simply applying prescriptive code requirements.
Nice to Have
- PE license or CPD (Certified in Plumbing Design) certification.
- Experience supporting fire sprinkler system design and hydraulic calculations.
- Experience with commercial kitchens, food service facilities, hospitality, healthcare, industrial, or oil and gas projects.
- Experience working in consulting engineering environments.
- Familiarity with Procore and cloud-based project management platforms.
