HR Manager

Los Angeles, CA

Who we are

Atoms is building the machines that power the next era of progress.

Over the last decade, software has transformed the digital world. But the physical world, where food is made, minerals are mined, goods are moved, and industries are run, remains far less intelligent, far less efficient, and far more constrained. We’re changing that.

Atoms builds Physical AI— real-world robots for the industries that move civilization forward, starting with food, mining, and transport. Our systems are designed to understand, predict, and control the real world with precision, turning complex physical operations into something more reliable, more scalable, and more productive.

This work requires more than robotics. It requires deep integration across hardware, software, AI, operations, manufacturing, and real estate. We don’t just build machines in a lab. We deploy them into real environments, operate them, learn from them, and improve them until they work at scale.

We are roboticists, engineers, operators, and builders. We believe the next great technology companies will not only transform information, but the physical systems that shape everyday life.

If you want to work on hard problems with real-world impact, join us.

About the role

The HR Manager is a key leadership role supporting a high-volume, complex transportation operation across multiple Los Angeles depots. This role directly manages a team of three HR Coordinators and serves as the primary HR partner to the Director of California Operations, and frontline leadership to support a high-volume, fast-paced operation with a large hourly workforce. You will act as a critical link between the field and headquarters – translating corporate HR strategy into action while ensuring full compliance with California-specific regulations, Los Angeles County ordinances, and CPUC/TNC mandates.

This is a hands-on, high-impact role responsible for building HR capability in the market, driving accountability and performance, and ensuring every employee interaction reflects our values of safety, professionalism, and operational excellence. You will lead employee relations, work closely with internal claims administrators and insurance providers on leave and workers’ compensation processes, and guide managers through complex people situations – all while building a culture of compliance and care.

What you’ll do

  • Manage and develop a team of HR Coordinators to scale market support and ensure consistent application of HR practices
  • Partner with local leaders on employee relations, terminations, policy enforcement, and frontline coaching
  • Support operational incident response, including coordination with insurance providers on WC claims, HR escalations, and employee concerns
  • Provide hands-on guidance in high-risk situations including protected leaves, workplace complaints, and investigations
  • Own leave management (FMLA, CFRA, PDL, ADA/FEHA) and lead the interactive process in coordination with Legal and Benefits
  • Ensure compliance with Federal, California labor law, Los Angeles County rules, CPUC/TNC mandates, wage/hour laws, and workers’ comp requirements
  • Coordinate onboarding, offboarding, and compliance workflows—including I-9s, pay notices, and file audits
  • Work alongside managers on documentation, progressive discipline, and people-related processes
  • Partner with Payroll and Legal to prevent and resolve wage/hour issues, misclassification risks, or off-the-clock work
  • Lead market-level engagement efforts (recognition, team-building, policy rollouts) in partnership with the Growth Team
  • Track local HR metrics and provide insights to HQ on trends, gaps, and compliance risks

What we’re looking for

  • Associate’s degree in HR or a related field is required; a bachelor’s degree is preferred
  • 5+ years of progressive HR experience, including at least 2 years in a generalist or business partner role within California
  • 2+ years of people management experience
  • Strong coaching and consultative skills; demonstrated success in partnering with field managers and hourly employee populations
  • Strong working knowledge of California employment law, including CFRA, PDL, FEHA, and wage/hour rules
  • Experience managing workers’ comp claims and return-to-work planning
  • Excellent documentation, follow-through, and judgment in employee relations cases
  • Proficient in HRIS (Paycor preferred), onboarding systems, and timekeeping platforms
  • Strong communicator with the ability to lead training, resolve conflict, and represent HR in the market
  • High integrity, discretion, and a hands-on, business-first mindset
