Scientist - Electron Microscopy Technology Platform
To develop a dynamic, integrated view of biological systems in health and disease, the Chan Zuckerberg Institute for Advanced Biological Imaging (CZ Imaging Institute) aims to push forward the development and application of new imaging technologies over the next 10 to 15 years. CZ Imaging Institute researchers will collaboratively develop breakthrough biological imaging systems centered around grand challenges that push the boundaries of what we can see and measure to obtain deep insights into the architecture of complex biological systems at the molecular level.
As an extension of the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative’s Imaging program, the CZ Imaging Institute (https://czii.org/) will create breakthrough technologies — hardware, software, biological probes, data, and platforms — that will be made available to the scientific community and adopted worldwide through a combination of direct access to the Institute, open sharing of advances, and commercial partnerships.
The Opportunity
We are seeking an experienced an experienced Scientist, Electron Microscopy Technology Platform (TP01), to be responsible for the automation and optimization of a cryo-electron tomography (cryoET) data collection pipeline. This position offers the opportunity to work at the forefront of cryo-electron microscopy technology, contributing to groundbreaking research and pushing the boundaries of what is possible in structural biology and molecular imaging.
What You’ll Do
- Maintain and curate software applications for the current cryoET data collection pipeline, which includes cryo light microscopes, focused ion beam scanning electron microscopes, and cryo transmission electron microscopes.
- Develop and adapt software solutions to improve throughput and overall integration of the data collection workflow.
- Coordinate closely with researchers and technology developers to understand their imaging needs and devise tailored solutions to meet those requirements.
- Stay up-to-date with the latest technologies and advancements in the field of electron microscopy, and integrate these innovations into the facility’s workflows.
What You’ll Bring
Essential –
- PhD in biophysics, structural biology, or a closely related field
- 3+ years of experience developing software applications for microscopy, particularly in the areas of instrument control and data acquisition (for electron microscopes)
- Strong knowledge of electron microscopy techniques, equipment, and data processing workflows
- Excellent software development skills, preferably in Python
- Proven track record of working effectively both independently and as part of a collaborative team
- Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and organizational abilities
Nice to have -
- Prior experience in preparing lamella on vitrified biological samples
- Familiarity with Thermo Fisher Scientific FIB-SEMs and Transmission Electron Microscopes (TEMs)
- Experience implementing automation in lamella-preparation workflows
- Master's degree in a relevant field
- Publication record demonstrating expertise in CryoEM techniques
The Chan Zuckerberg Biohub Network requires all employees, regardless of work location or type of role, to provide proof of their initial COVID-19 vaccination by their start date. Those who are unable to get vaccinated because of a disability, or who choose not to be vaccinated due to a sincerely held religious belief, practice, or observance must have an approved exception prior to their start date.
