The Role

  • Lead the design and development of Powertrain Cooling (Engine, Motors, Batteries, Transmission, Power Electronics, etc.), HVAC (Heating Ventilation & Air Conditioning), and Heat Protection Systems for multiple projects from concept all the way through to actual vehicle production.  
  • Focus on heating and cooling of the powertrain and cabin to deliver peak performance and efficiency.  
  • Set system targets including airflow, temperature limits, and drive cycles.  
  • Produce concept schematics using MS Visio and perform hand calculations in Excel to define component specifications.  
  • Lead initiatives to make the system more robust and fault tolerant, introduce new hardware pedigrees, enable new features, increase performance and refine the overall system.  
  • Build a Bill of Materials and add details to the schematics to start both the design and 1D simulation processes.  
  • Engage with suppliers for manufacturing of parts to build fully instrumented prototype cars.  
  • Run the prototype cars through a range of lab and track-based tests and feed the test results into the design and 1D simulation so that improvements and refinements can be made.  
  • Create 2D engineering specifications based upon the modelling results and approve final design plans.  
  • Take the verification prototype vehicles through an additional range of lab and track-based sign-off tests to confirm meeting the original targets and confirm suitability for series production. 
  • Direct supervision of approximately 3-5 Automotive Engineers. 
  • Position requires domestic travel approximately six times per year and international travel to the UK/Europe approximately every three months. 

Basic Qualifications

  • Master of Science in Automotive Engineering Technology, Motorsport Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or closely related field.   
  • At least FIVE (5) years of experience in the job offered or at least FIVE (5) years of experience in the following: 
    1. Leading the design and development of Powertrain Cooling (Drive Units, Batteries, Power Electronics) from concept through to series production for Tier 1 automobile manufacturing company, including high-performance hybrid powertrains
    2. Thermal system management strategies for high-performance sport cars and SUVs 
    3. Running comprehensive simulations and diagnostic tests to confirm thermal systems are running as expected and adjusting the systems as necessary
    4. Managing and developing a team of automotive engineers working on thermal systems  
    5. Creating Bill of Materials and Design Verification Plans for automobile prototypes 
  • FIVE years of experience must include at least ONE (1) year of experience in the following: 
    1. Leading the design and development of HVAC (Heating, Ventilation & Air Conditioning) from concept through to series production for automobile manufacturing company
    2. Designing and developing thermal systems for electric vehicles

Pay Range

$207,000 - $220,832 USD
