Data Analytics Engineer II
What we do
Darkhorse Emergency is an Edmonton-based software and analytics consulting firm. We build specialized tools that help fire departments and other publc safety agencies make data-driven decisions so they can better serve their communities. We are currently expanding rapidly into the United States market and broadening our product offering.
What you’ll be doing
As a Data Analytics Engineer, you will join our Product team to build and improve our data analytics platform. Our application developers will look to you to ensure quality data comes from the database. Our customer team analysts will look to you to provide tools that allow them to implement our apps and provide accurate data solutions for customers. Everything in between — data pipelines, processing, statistical modelling, you name it — will be in your domain. You'll work with datasets such as 9-1-1 response information, road networks, and geospatial population forecasts. Your mission will be to maintain and improve all components of our technology stack and help us grow and scale. The job will be challenging. You’ll need to focus on long-term goals while also addressing immediate client needs. You will balance quick fixes for today's problems and sustainable solutions for future challenges. And, most importantly, a passion for our mission.
Specifically, you will:
- Improve processes for onboarding new clients efficiently and identifying data quality issues.
- Work with data analysts to adjust the platform for emerging client needs, balancing quality and timeliness.
- Collaborate with application developers to integrate the analytical backend with new client-facing front-end features.
- Maintain our production Postgres database, Python tools and related codebases
- Explore new technologies that could further improve our processes
- Streamline, clean, and enhance our database and data pipeline to ensure efficiency, reliability, and maintainability.
- Automate data ingestion tools and data quality checks.
- Create documentation and training materials and provide team support.
What you should offer
- 3-5 years experience in software development, data analytics or engineering, preferably in a product-oriented SaaS or tech company.
- Proficiency in Python for data processing and SQL for data transformation.
- Passion for providing the foundational work our team needs to deliver excellent customer service.
- Ability to handle multiple priorities in a small but ambitious, product-led growth SaaS company.
- Attention to detail without losing sight of the bigger picture.
- Strong cross-functional communication skills and the ability to work with non-engineer stakeholders.

What would be nice to have
- Experience with modern approaches to data transformation, management, and data pipeline integrations.
- Experience with orchestration technologies like Prefect, Airflow, or Luigi.
- Experience with business intelligence tools like Tableau or PowerBI.
- Understanding of data visualization design theory.
- Experience creating data visualizations with code.
- Experience in other programming languages.
- Experience with geospatial datasets and tools.
- Familiarity with Jupyter Notebooks, Excel, Tableau, data analytics, data science.
- Experience with Amazon Web Services.

What we offer
- Competitive salaries in a transparent salary environment. The base salary for this position is $80,000 - $100,000, subject to experience.
