Accounting Manager

As the Accounting Manager, you will take ownership of a wide variety of accounting tasks including full cycle corporate accounting, financial reporting and improving financial processes. You will facilitate tasks from start to finish and take ownership of complex responsibilities and materials with minimal oversight. Your work will have few errors or rework required. As the role evolves and the individual gains experience, there will be opportunities for further growth and development in taking on a variety of special projects.
Job Responsibilities
- Complete month end close for all Darkhorse entities (Canada and US) including: reconciliation of revenue, deferred revenue and work in progress, accrued liabilities, cost of goods sold, depreciation, intercompany and overhead allocations, foreign exchange adjustments and tax accruals.
- Liaise with company bookkeeper on month end bank and credit card reconciliations and expense approvals, and quarterly sales tax returns.
- Draft the monthly reporting packages for each company including variance reports and KPIs.
- Prepare / support with quarter and year end financial statements and packages within prescribed timelines.
- Monitor cash flow and account balances, approve payments and transfer cash between accounts and legal entities.
- Coordinate with clients including account setup and accounts receivable follow up.
- Administer total compensation plans and support with changes as requested.
- Investigate and report on financial statement variances.
- Assist with compiling year end packages for Canadian and US financial statements.
- Calculate and pay CRA and IRS instalments.
- Complete contract documentation audits and maintain updated information for banking, tax forms, insurance, etc.
- Collaborate with external stakeholders such as bookkeeping firm on day to day accounting operations.
- Assist with grant reporting and applications as needed.
- Ensure accounting processes are carried out within the guidelines of Darkhorse policies and procedures and compliant with all applicable accounting standards.
- Issue corporate credit cards, review and approve semi-monthly accounts payable runs.
- Maintain up to date licencing and US legal/tax requirements and complete reporting as required.
- Facilitate the operationalization of all company accounting policies and procedures, including internal controls.
- Support the Director of Finance in working with departments and management on budget targets, intercompany transactions and structure, forecasting, cost management, quarterly and annual financial statements and reporting, and other ad hoc projects.
- Utilize technology and champion AI adoption to streamline the processing and reporting of financial information, including month end automation, AI-generated trend analysis and insights, and document processing.
- Improve our tools and processes, and troubleshoot software.
- As experience is gained, complete annual Canadian / US financial statements and tax returns including reviewing draft financials, booking adjusting journal entries etc.
- Over time, begin to develop relationships with third party stakeholders such as lawyers, accounting firm, auditors, financial institutions and other industry partners.
- Learn to conduct payroll activities such as benefits statement reviews, company transfers, coordinating leaves of absence, T4s, onboarding and offboarding with our bookkeeper.
- As skills are honed, support with SR&ED program administration and project management, grant applications and reporting.
- Support the Director of Finance in reviewing and actioning CRA correspondence.
What We Look For
- Bachelor of Commerce degree in Accounting from a recognized Canadian postsecondary institution.
- Minimum two years experience in full cycle accounting, or exposure through audit.
- CPA designation completed or in progress.
- Advanced skills in Microsoft Excel.
- Proficiency with modern accounting tools, platforms and software, including willingness to adopt and experiment with AI tools.
- Knowledge and experience of Canadian GAAP (US would also be considered an asset).
- Audit experience in Big 4 or midsize public practice firm would strongly be considered an asset.
- Extremely accurate and detail-oriented but can execute on the big picture.
- Self-starter who is able to work both independently and collaboratively

- Highly organized with strong professional sense of discretion and tact when dealing with confidential data.
