About the Opportunity
Bookstore Associate | $50k; full-time, 1 year contract, paid hourly, overtime eligible
David Zwirner Books is seeking an experienced Bookstore Associate for our store located at 525 West 19th Street. Reporting to the Marketing and Sales Operations Manager, the Bookstore Associate should be highly personable, focused, and hardworking, with excellent attention to detail. The position is expected to deliver a knowledgeable, thoughtful, and inspiring customer service experience, which plays an integral role in achieving the store’s sales goals. Additionally, the Bookstore Associate is expected to uphold the David Zwirner standards, policies, and procedures.
Please note that this role requires significant physical labor including lifting and carrying heavy books and relocating them between store and receiving locations. The schedule is Tuesday–Saturday, 9:45 AM–6 PM, and requires additional hours for gallery openings and occasional events.
What you’ll do:
- Operational Duties
- Merchandise store for sell-through and new product launches.
- Perform daily procedures including opening and closing, light cleaning and organizing, and store maintenance and replenishment.
- Maintain an accurate inventory, and advise on re-order placement.
- Accurately process sales for internal and external clients, using Square and Shopify.
- Assist in organizing, planning, and running events from book signings to special sales.
- Assist with the shipping and receiving of bookstore inventory.
- Draft and share information guides on related books for exhibitions on view.
- Collaborate with the social media team to assist with the creation of images.
- Assist with fulfillment of e-commerce orders through Shopify.
- Client Experience
- Ensure a welcoming client focused environment, which includes offering best in class service, in person and through electronic communication.
- Greet visitors with professionalism, while answering questions about our books, artists, the gallery, and more.
- Assist with managing info@ email / customer service inbox.
- Sales Performance
- Achieve and exceed Sales Goals.
- Maintain a strong drive for results and a positive, team first attitude at all times.
- Demonstrate expertise in product knowledge, brand values, promotions, and policies.
- Create weekly sales reports for review.
- Team Success
- Work with the Publishing Intern who will provide support for the Bookstore.
- Effectively partner and communicate with gallery colleagues and teams when relevant.
- Actively contribute to a positive and elevated work environment.
- Demonstrate and embody company values via conduct, communication, and decision-making.
What we would like you to have:
- 2–3 years experience in a gallery or retail space, preferably within spaces associated with the arts or books.
- Ability to work Saturdays and some evenings (store hours are 5 days/week, 10 AM–6 PM daily). Some nights may be extended to 8 PM pending special events.
- Working knowledge of literature and the arts.
- Strong commitment to artists and the artistic program of the gallery.
- A collaborative and positive attitude with an eagerness to take on new challenges.
