About the Opportunity
Rights & Reproductions Associate | $68k - 78k
David Zwirner seeks a Rights & Reproductions Associate at the gallery’s New York headquarters, reporting to the Director of Digital Assets. The Rights and Reproductions Associate is responsible for coordinating the acquisition of reproduction rights and permissions for images in all media for use in the gallery’s exhibitions, public programs, website, advertising and promotions. This role also manages incoming third-party image rights requests by securing permissions from gallery artists and estates, and distributing media to requestors for educational use, publishing projects, and other uses. This role involves overseeing copyright compliance, licensing agreements, and the reproduction of materials, ensuring that all usage aligns with legal and contractual obligations. The Rights & Reproductions Associate operates on a hybrid schedule, on-site 4 days per week, and remote 1 day per week.
What you’ll do:
Research and Due Diligence:
- Conduct research to determine the copyright status of intellectual property, determine image and artist rights, ownership of copyright, and required clearances.
- Perform due diligence in identifying and verifying the ownership of content.
- Correspond with rights owner(s) or legal representatives concerning terms of use, credit lines, fees, restrictions, etc.
- Special projects and relevant tasks as requested.
Licensing and Permissions:
- Oversee the gallery’s public-facing Rights email account and complete image tracking documentation.
- Timely management of all incoming third-party image rights requests and secure permissions from gallery artists and estates for approval, and distribution of all media, including images, text, film and other audiovisual work created by the gallery’s artists and Estates to third-party requestors.
- Obtain permissions and rights for the use of intellectual property for the gallery’s exhibitions, website, press kits, Online Viewing Rooms and other digital initiatives (Social Media, Video, Podcast, and DZ Web).
- Collecting and delivering the image assets with the proper captions, data, copyright/courtesy and collection lines and usage terms to all relevant systems, marketing channels and other internal or external parties.
- Validating and updating caption, copyright, courtesy line, and other relevant rights data for any assets shared with internal or external parties.
What we would like you to have:
- Bachelor's degree in a related field, such as law, arts management, or library and information science.
- 3-5 years of experience in rights and reproductions, intellectual property management, or a related field.
- Knowledge of copyright laws, licensing agreements, and intellectual property rights.
- Knowledge of collection documentation, digital imaging standards, loan and rights negotiation.
- Strong prioritization and organizational skills, with meticulous attention to detail.
- Proficiency in editorial and proofing skills.
- Familiarity with database and record-keeping software.
- Excellent communication skills.
