We continually pursue sustainable ways to optimize our work, striving to ensure we cultivate an environment where people can be both highly collaborative and deeply creative, making responsible and groundbreaking research progress at pace. We build positive relationships with teams, bringing clarity to ambiguity and providing stability during change. We provide expertise in various program management techniques to structure abstract and complex research, engineering and operational projects across the business. We use our coaching skills to support and enable people and teams to do their best work together. We continually deepen our domain knowledge, working alongside researchers and engineers to ensure all our work is advancing towards our mission.
The Role
This is an FTE role for the Sustainability Program at Google DeepMind. Our program’s mission is to revolutionize environmental sustainability with AI. We have an active portfolio of projects where we are applying AI towards challenging problems in grid operations, renewable energy, weather modeling, biodiversity, and agriculture. We work on both real-world applications as well as root-node research problems, aiming to achieve fundamental breakthroughs using AI to benefit science and society. We maintain a high standard of rigor for our scientific work, and are a passionate team of researchers motivated to achieve scientific breakthroughs and benefit humanity.
This role will stretch across one or more research projects in our sustainability portfolio. As a Technical Program Manager on research projects, you will be responsible for managing internal operations and external launches (of papers, code, products, etc.), ensuring research outputs are well-organized, aligned with our organizational priorities, time-managed, and ambitious in nature. You will have opportunities to both operate at highly strategic levels–helping define and manage research roadmaps, partnerships, and stakeholder groups–as well as technical and operational levels–building dashboards to track analytics, processing legal and security reviews, establishing communication channels and managing cross-functional meetings.
In addition to managing aspects of one or more research projects, you will have opportunities to contribute to defining operational processes and reporting, facilitating governance meetings, and influencing horizontal strategic discussions across the program. You will work across disciplines and within a highly-global team that welcomes collaborators across our US, UK, India, and European locations.
Key responsibilities:
- End-to-end Project Management: Drive project workflow and delivery planning from start to finish, within research and product strategies. This includes establishing technical requirements, formulating clear timelines for delivery, and establishing progress monitoring practices. Use various methodologies (e.g., agile, waterfall) and tools (e.g., project plans, agile boards, retrospectives) to ensure research launches and milestones are met.
- Cross-functional Collaboration: Facilitate discussions and collaborative opportunities across Google Product Areas to align on goals and decisions.
- Risk and Progress Management: Track project progress, maintain up-to-date documentation, and proactively identify and address potential issues and risks. Evaluate and manage ongoing risks and opportunities across the entire program portfolio. Report progress and challenges to leads.
- Performance and Impact Measurement: Support leads in defining key metrics and achievements to measure the success of programs against their goals. Share lessons and insights with the wider Sustainability Program and code/design simple dashboards or tools as needed to track and communicate progress.
- Program and Strategy Leadership: Collaborate with research leads on defining and executing the vision and technical strategy for sustainability research projects and tech transfer processes.
- Project and Program Operations: Support the wider operations team in key project and Sustainability Program activities, including all-team meetings and summits.
Partnership Management: Occasionally build and manage external partnerships with government, non-profit, academic and industry organizations, when necessary for delivering research project impact.
- Operational Excellence: Identify and implement improvements to tools, processes, and ways of working to enhance program efficiency.
- Curiosity and Domain Knowledge: Demonstrate a commitment to learning and staying current with the field of AI and various sustainability fields, such as energy grids, renewables, weather science, biodiversity, and agriculture. Leverage AI and sustainability domain knowledge to advise on team strategy and partnerships.
- AI Integration: Design and incorporate AI tools into personal and team workflows to improve efficiency and effectiveness.
