This is a critical and high impact strategic role that will drive AI strategy, infrastructure investments and AI product portfolio optimization across Google. The role sits within Google DeepMind’s Technology Strategy (TechStrat) function and is a leadership role within Techstrat’s Compute team. Since compute has become the key ingredient for AI model leadership, AI serving success and next generation AI research, this leader will drive high impact decisions that will define the success of Google, with implications on the future of AI for the world.

The role

As one of the key senior leaders of the compute Tech Strategy team, this role will own the success of our AI strategy by driving the maximal product impact for Google and AI impact for humanity. This leader will have the responsibility of framing key strategic decisions for our SVP+ leadership group based on deep analysis of the situation including value at stake from AI investments, investment optimization options, Industry understanding, financial modeling, product strategy analysis and understanding. They will be constantly looking for opportunities to push the envelope of impact from our investments in AI and inspire the team to do the same. This leader will also drive the synthesis of the situation into SVP+ consumable frameworks and crisp grounded and data backed options. They will then ensure the strategy is executed flawlessly partnering with a multitude of cross functional teams and stakeholders.

Key responsibilities

Personally drive and amplify impact through leading a team to  

  • Investigate and drive clarity on some of Google’s hardest long range strategic questions in AI
  • Create new and partner with existing virtual teams across Google to create comprehensive product and policy plans that stand the test of time
  • Model scenarios and various tradeoffs to create opinionated strategies for maximizing AI value and optimizing AI investments across Google
  • Create SVP+ forum content (presentations, communications, mandates)
  • Help develop a per-mandate monitoring view to keep programs accountable 
  • Collaborate with operational teams and forums in AI  to ensure that company-wide SVP+mandates are set up for success -- well organized, staffed and delivering on desired goals.
  • Stay connected across Google to maintain a living catalog of ongoing experiments & proposed innovations that may become worthy of discussion at NRC
  • Identify gaps in our processes and information and propose/implement solutions.

About you

Are you a PM who thrives as both a central hub orchestrating complex and long running investigations AND a rapid iteration IC who can quickly create something out of nothing and move on to the next thing? This is the job for you. In both cases, you must be able to concisely communicate the merits & risks of multiple scenarios in documents that will get circulated broadly and to some of the most senior folks at the company. If you have high energy, a positive attitude, strong tech judgment, excellent interpersonal skills, and are excited to handle complex pan-Google topics and SVP audiences, this job will offer an opportunity to have a massive company-wide impact.

In order to set you up for success as a Product Manager at DeepMind, we look for the following skills and experience:

  • BA/BS degree in Computer Science/ EE or equivalent practical experience in a technical and/or business area
  • 15+ years of product management experience for a technology-driven company, at scale, including a proven track record in driving 0->1 product capabilities and founding or incubating new, high-impact technical initiatives. 
  • Exceptional organizational talent running high velocity, high impact, strategic programs
  • Stellar verbal and written communication; past experience with SVP/VP+ level audiences
  • Extensive experience in product operations and business strategy
  • Strong analytics, strategy, and data fluency experience
  • Experience in a role that deals with machine learning and/or compute
  • Innovative problem solver that can turn ambiguous problem spaces into clear solutions
  • Ability to influence without direct authority, you adeptly work on and with technical and cross-functional or highly matrixed teams in a way that leads to aligned decision making

In addition, the following would be an advantage: 

  • Familiarity with the role of compute and data in building LLMs and the capabilities of these models 
  • Strong product vision and sensibility, ideally with prior and proven experience embedding applied AI capabilities into products and a track record of leveraging AI productivity tools
  • 5+ years of product strategy work experience in managing highly-complex, technically-challenging projects spanning a wide set of stakeholders
  • A quantitative and analytical mentality to understand Google PA and external user needs
  • Experience navigating sensitive organizational dynamics
  • Collaborating within data-driven or quantitative-focused teams
  • A consistent record of creative problem solving and a bias towards action
  • Outstanding business judgment
  • Outstanding organizational, prioritization, and multitasking skills.
  • Excellent communication skills
  • A proven track record of building positive relationships with senior
  • stakeholders and influencing strong personalities within a complex business environment
  • Experience in corporate planning
  • Ability to manage multiple concurrent complex interactions with geographically disparate teams
  • Past people management experience; Experience in hiring and leading teams, including distributed teams
