Assistant Project Manager – Structural Steel
Springfield, MO | Full-Time | On-Site
Reports To: Project Manager
About the Role
DeVille Steel is looking for an Assistant Project Manager to work alongside our Project Manager in delivering structural steel projects from first contact to final delivery. This is a learn-by-doing role: you'll own the day-to-day details that keep projects moving — submittals, RFIs, procurement follow-up, delivery coordination, drawing-reading, budgeting, and client-relationship skills that lead to running projects of your own. If you're organized, hungry to learn, and want a clear path into project management in the steel industry, this role was built for you.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the Project Manager across all phases of structural steel projects — from initial scoping and information gathering through fabrication, delivery, and closeout.
- Prepare, submit, and track shop drawings, RFIs, and submittals; maintain accurate project logs (RFI, change order, and drawing logs) so nothing falls through the cracks.
- Assist with material procurement, purchase order follow-up, and tracking deliveries against the fabrication and erection schedule.
- Help issue cut sheets to the fabrication team and coordinate hand-offs between detailers, the shop, and steel erectors.
- Assist in preparing and tracking project budgets, change orders, and cost updates alongside the Project Manager.
- Support project administration — processing invoices for PM review, gathering lien waivers, and assembling closeout and warranty documentation.
- Attend project meetings with general contractors and clients alongside the Project Manager; capture action items and follow through on them.
- Make occasional jobsite visits to review status, take photos, verify field conditions, or coordinate deliveries.
- Flag scheduling conflicts, drawing discrepancies, and material issues early — before they become problems.
Qualifications
- Ability to read construction drawings — or a demonstrated aptitude and strong desire to develop it quickly. Exposure to structural, architectural, or civil drawings is a big plus.
- Highly organized with strong attention to detail; comfortable managing logs, documents, and deadlines across multiple projects at once.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills — you'll be corresponding with general contractors, subcontractors, vendors, and our own shop daily.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Outlook; experience with Bluebeam, Tekla, or fabrication management software (FabSuite/Tekla PowerFab, Strumis, or similar) is a plus.
- 1–3 years of experience in construction, steel fabrication, or a related field preferred — but we'll consider sharp, motivated candidates ready to learn the trade.
- Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Business, or a related field preferred; high school diploma or equivalent required.
- A team-first attitude and the initiative to chase down answers without being asked twice.
Growth Path
This role is designed as a stepping stone into full project management. You'll be mentored directly by an experienced Project Manager, with increasing ownership of project scopes as your skills develop.
Location
This is an in-office role based in Springfield, MO. We're prioritizing local candidates but are open to the right person from outside the area.
