Clearance Requirement: U.S. Citizenship is required. Must be able to obtain a DHS Public Trust Clearance.
We are seeking a skilled Sr. Systems Engineer to lead the migration of a Windows-based legacy on-premises application environment into AWS GovCloud. This role will focus on designing, planning, and executing a seamless transition from physical and virtual Windows infrastructure—including IIS-hosted applications and Windows VMs— to a secure, scalable, and cost-optimized AWS environment. The ideal candidate will have deep expertise in cloud architecture, Windows application hosting, and application migration strategies, with hands-on experience in configuring IIS, managing Windows-based workloads, and leveraging AWS services for modernization.
The Sr. Systems Engineer will collaborate with application owners, developers, security teams, and project stakeholders to assess current infrastructure, define migration roadmaps, and implement best practices for cloud adoption. Responsibilities will include performing application and dependency mapping, configuring AWS services to replicate or improve existing capabilities, ensuring compliance with security and regulatory standards, and validating performance post-migration. This position is critical to ensuring minimal downtime, data integrity, and optimal operational efficiency throughout the migration process.
What You'll Be Doing:
- Lead the migration of Windows-based legacy applications, including IIS-hosted services, from on-premises infrastructure to AWS GovCloud.
- Configure and optimize Windows Servers, IIS, and Windows VMs in both on-premises and AWS environments.
- Perform application and dependency mapping to ensure all components are accurately migrated and integrated.
- Design and implement scalable, secure, and cost-effective AWS architectures to replicate or enhance existing capabilities.
- Develop migration roadmaps, cutover strategies, and rollback plans to ensure minimal downtime and business continuity.
- Collaborate with developers, application owners, and security teams to validate performance, compliance, and data integrity.
- Automate infrastructure provisioning and deployment using tools such as CloudFormation, Terraform, and PowerShell.
- Ensure compliance with FedRAMP, FISMA, and other regulatory requirements for AWS GovCloud environments.
- Monitor, troubleshoot, and optimize migrated workloads for performance, cost, and reliability.
- Document migration processes, configurations, and operational procedures for knowledge transfer and support.
Required Education, Experience, and Skills:
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or equivalent professional experience.
- 7+ years of experience as a Systems Engineer or similar role, with at least 3+ years focused on AWS cloud architecture and migration.
- Proven experience migrating Windows-based legacy applications and infrastructure into AWS.
- Hands-on expertise in configuring and managing Windows Server, IIS (Internet Information Services), and Windows-based VMs.
- Deep knowledge of AWS GovCloud and its security/compliance requirements.
- Strong experience with AWS services, including EC2, S3, RDS, VPC, IAM, CloudFormation/Terraform, and CloudWatch.
- Background in system integration, application dependency mapping, and performance optimization.
- Proficiency with automation tools and scripting (PowerShell, Python, Bash).
- Solid understanding of networking concepts (DNS, VPNs, firewalls, load balancing) and hybrid cloud connectivity.
- Strong knowledge of security best practices, including IAM, encryption, and compliance frameworks (FedRAMP, FISMA).
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to lead cross-functional teams.
- Strong experience with Jira for team collaboration and task management
- Ability to create clear, structured documentation, including diagrams, workflows, and procedures
- Experience with documentation version control and content governance
- Familiarity with diagramming tools (Visio, PowerPoint, etc.)
- Demonstrated history of creating and maintaining comprehensive technical documentation
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities with an eye for operationalizing modernized implementations and system maintainability
- Excellent written communication skills with attention to detail
- Ability to translate complex technical concepts into clear, accessible documentation for non-technical people
- Collaborative approach to knowledge sharing and team documentation practices
- Detail-oriented with strong organizational and documentation practices
- Willingness to mentor team members and share knowledge of the domain and technicalities of work
- Active, or the ability to obtain a DHS Public Trust Clearance
Preferred Education, Experience, and Skills:
- AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Professional or equivalent advanced AWS certification.
- Experience with containerization and orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes, ECS, or EKS).
- Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices.
- Prior experience in modernizing or re-platforming Windows/IIS applications in AWS.
