UI/UX Designer (Video Games)
The Company
Classic video games deserve better. At Digital Eclipse, we treat them with the same care and respect given to other artistic mediums. In its original incarnation in 1994, Digital Eclipse pioneered accurate video game re-releases, emulating vintage arcade games well before “emulation” was a household word. 30 years later, we’ve been reborn as a new kind of studio - one dedicated to not only restoring gaming’s heritage, but to preserving it and keeping it alive and available for future generations.
We've launched critically acclaimed titles like Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Rita’s Rewind, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection, and Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration, while also developing successful original IPs like #IDARB and collaborating with industry leaders such as Capcom and Disney. And we're just getting started.
The Role
We’re looking for a UI/UX Designer to help shape the player experience through thoughtful, visually compelling design. In this hands-on role, you’ll create intuitive flows, user interfaces, and visual elements that support both gameplay and storytelling. You’ll work closely with designers, artists, and engineers to ensure a cohesive and engaging experience—producing mockups, mapping out flows, and helping bring those designs to life in-game. This role is a great fit for someone with console development experience, a passion for clean, communicative design, and a deep love for classic video games.
What You’ll Do
- Design intuitive, player-friendly UI for gameplay, menus, inventory systems, HUDs, and more.
- Create visual mockups, wireframes, and interaction flows using tools like Photoshop, Illustrator, Figma, or similar.
- Develop and maintain a cohesive UI style across the game, ensuring usability and aesthetic consistency.
- Work closely with engineers to implement UI designs into the game engine (Unreal, Unity, or proprietary tools).
- Provide production-ready assets and documentation to streamline implementation.
- Iterate based on feedback from QA, internal teams, and playtesting.
- Help define and improve our internal UI/UX pipeline and best practices
Must Haves
- Professional experience designing UI/UX for video games.
- Demonstrated ownership of UI/UX across shipped products.
- Ability to balance functionality, usability, and visual polish in designs.
- Familiarity with a range of visual styles and UI production values.
- Experience designing and iterating on inventory systems, menu navigation, HUDs, and online/multiplayer flows.
- Strong collaboration skills with cross-disciplinary teams, especially engineers.
- Proficiency in industry-standard UI tools (Photoshop, Figma, Illustrator, etc.).
- Working knowledge of interface structure and web technologies (e.g., HTML/CSS).
- Highly organized and self-directed, with excellent communication skills.
- Excited to learn and adapt to new challenges.
- Highly collaborative, organized, and proactive.
- Passion for video games, especially retro games.
- Ability to commute or relocate to Emeryville, CA.
Bonus Points
- Technical proficiency, including scripting or prior engineering experience.
- Console development experience.
Compensation, Benefits + Perks
- Salary Range: $90,000-$110,000/year. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.
- Medical, vision and dental benefits
- Generous parental leave
- 15+ paid holidays + vacation and sick leave
- A friendly office with collaborative and talented colleagues, an arcade, and rooftop deck to enjoy office lunches and BBQs
