Staff Software Engineer, Social Gaming
Discord is used by over 200 million people every month for many different reasons, but there’s one thing that nearly everyone does on our platform: play video games. Over 90% of our users play games, spending a combined 1.5 billion hours playing thousands of unique titles on Discord each month. Discord plays a uniquely important role in the future of gaming. We are focused on making it easier and more fun for people to talk and hang out before, during, and after playing games.
What You'll Be Doing
- Design and build out core features for our audience of game developers. This could include anything from our C++ SDKs, our APIs, realtime infrastructure, and modeling stuff out for data systems. Whatever it takes to get the important thing done.
- Work with the Engineering Manager and other Senior and Staff Engineers to foster a strong culture of software engineering. Great engineering teams are always finding new ways to iterate and improve.
- Use your attention to detail to continually raise the quality bar of the software we write.
- Pair with the other engineers on your team to write, review, and ship elegant and scalable code. Take pride in the fact that your code will be used by millions and millions of people!
- Collaborate with our game developer partners to better understand their needs in order to improve our tools. This could mean hopping into partner meetings as a technical expert, answering questions in channels, and listening to their feedback to improve our product.
- Work with product managers, designers, and product marketers to cut through ambiguity and find the way forward.
What you should have
- You have several years experience with Python, Rust, or React.
- You have 8-10 years experience as a software engineer.
- You have at least 2 years experience with C++. It’s ok if this is rusty.
- You have a sense for product and design. We don’t operate in silos, and you’ll be collaborating closely with cross-functional peers. You should be able to express opinions and collaborate to make something great.
- You take a holistic approach to problem solving. You believe in solving a problem from first principles rather than simply shipping a solution. You learn from your mistakes and work through obstacles with the rest of the team.
