Senior Engineering Manager, Core Product

San Francisco, CA or Remote (U.S.)

Discord is used by over 200 million people every month for many different reasons, but there’s one thing that nearly everyone does on our platform: play video games. Over 90% of our users play games, spending a combined 1.5 billion hours playing thousands of unique titles on Discord each month. Discord plays a uniquely important role in the future of gaming. We are focused on making it easier and more fun for people to talk and hang out before, during, and after playing games.

We're seeking a visionary leader for our Messaging Team in Core Product — someone who can transform how millions communicate every day. In this role, you'll help set strategic direction and oversee the development of the core of how people use Discord today and in the future. You'll drive user value, impact key metrics, deliver exceptionally designed products, and ensure your team is enabled and streamlined. We need a highly driven, opinionated leader who can collaborate deeply with product managers — leading products, writing specs when needed, and helping with opportunity sizing. We're looking for someone who understands that being a manager means filling whatever gap needs filling.

In this leadership role, you will be critical to Discord's success, building features that millions use every day and representing the forefront of Discord's brand. You'll wear many hats—creating teams that ship the highest quality products and iterate quickly, jumping into code to understand and mentor the team, pulling data, or writing product specifications as needed. This role reports to our Director of Core Product, Nick Reynolds.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Collaborating closely with your cross-functional team (Product, Design, Data Science, UX Research, and Marketing) to drive your team's roadmap, vision, and deliver measurable impact
  • Making sound first-principle decisions around resourcing and communicating the rationale clearly to partners and team members
  • Partnering with your org leader on strategic planning and to improve the Engineering organization and uphold our workplace philosophy
  • Driving product decisions with our goals in mind while maintaining a high bar for feature quality, delivering delightful experiences, and moving quickly
  • Using your technical expertise to make appropriate tradeoffs and ensure your team delivers high-quality products efficiently

What you should have:

  • 5+ years of experience as an engineer working across the stack and familiarity with the latest frontend patterns
  • 3+ years of experience as an Engineering Manager, having led teams of 8 or more
  • Experience actively using Discord with friends or within communities
  • Experience leading a consumer product team with clear metrics goals, strong product sense, and pride in delivering high-quality experiences that drive impact
  • Growth mindset and goal orientation with a drive to strive for excellence
  • Commitment to helping team members succeed and experience mentoring and growing engineers
  • Willingness to get hands-on – we're looking for someone to manage primarily, but our leaders should feel comfortable jumping into code to understand our product better and make direct changes when needed

Bonus Points

  • Experience with React or React Native
  • Previous work on consumer communication products
  • Demonstrated contribution to great product experiences that you've helped deliver

Voluntary Self-Identification of Disability

Form CC-305
OMB Control Number 1250-0005
Expires 04/30/2026

Why are you being asked to complete this form?

We are a federal contractor or subcontractor. The law requires us to provide equal employment opportunity to qualified people with disabilities. We have a goal of having at least 7% of our workers as people with disabilities. The law says we must measure our progress towards this goal. To do this, we must ask applicants and employees if they have a disability or have ever had one. People can become disabled, so we need to ask this question at least every five years.

Completing this form is voluntary, and we hope that you will choose to do so. Your answer is confidential. No one who makes hiring decisions will see it. Your decision to complete the form and your answer will not harm you in any way. If you want to learn more about the law or this form, visit the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) website at www.dol.gov/ofccp.
