Position:

The Café Assistant Manager supports the Director of Operations in overseeing daily café operations and ensuring an exceptional guest experience. This is a non-exempt role that helps lead the café team, maintains compliance with all health and safety standards, supports training initiatives, and contributes to a positive, efficient, and service-focused environment. The ideal candidate is a strong communicator, highly organized, and committed to upholding the café’s values and brand standards.

Key Responsibilities:

 Operational Management

  • Assist with daily café operations, including opening and closing procedures, cash handling, and inventory control.
  • Ensure smooth workflow and timely service during peak hours.
  • Maintain appropriate stock levels of food, beverages, and supplies; support ordering and receiving processes.
  • Oversee café cleanliness, organization, and presentation to meet company and health department requirements.
  • Support scheduling, time-keeping, and staffing needs to ensure adequate coverage.

 Training & Staff Development

  • Train new and existing team members on café procedures, customer service standards, and company policies.
  • Deliver training on key operational topics including:
    • Food safety, sanitation, and health department compliance
    • Food handling and cleanliness protocols
    • Cash register operations and accurate cash handling
    • Menu details, ingredients, allergens, and beverage preparation
    • Customer interaction, upselling, and brand representation
  • Conduct periodic refresher training to reinforce best practices.
  • Provide ongoing coaching, performance support, and real-time feedback to staff.

 Customer Service & Quality Assurance

  • Ensure every guest receives prompt, friendly, and professional service.
  • Monitor product quality and consistency for all food and beverage items.
  • Address customer questions or concerns in a professional and solution-oriented manner.
  • Foster a welcoming, positive atmosphere that encourages repeat business and guest satisfaction.

 Administrative & Operational Support

  • Assist with sales tracking, financial reporting, and daily cash reconciliation.
  • Participate in staff meetings and contribute to process improvements and operational initiatives.
  • Complete additional tasks and projects as assigned by management.

Requirements (Must-Have)

  • Minimum 2 years of experience in food & beverage, hospitality, or café/restaurant operations.
  • At least 1 year of supervisory or shift-lead experience.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including early mornings, weekends, holidays, and special events.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills; able to manage a team of up to 15 staff.
  • Valid Food Handler’s Permit or ability to obtain required manager-level certifications (e.g., ServSafe).
  • Knowledge of food safety, sanitation, and health department regulations.
  • Proficiency with basic computer applications (POS systems, spreadsheets, email, etc.).
  • Ability to lift 30–50 lbs, stand for extended periods, and work in a fast-paced environment.

Qualifications (Preferred)

  • Supervisory experience in a café, coffee shop, or quick-service environment.
  • Experience recruiting, training, and developing staff.
  • Experience promotional events, marketing efforts, or loyalty programs.
  • Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Hospitality, Business, or a related field.
  • Experience with café operations including scheduling, inventory management, budgeting, or financial reporting.
