District of Columbia International School (DCI) is a public charter school serving over 1600 racially and economically diverse students in grades 6-12 from across the District of Columbia. Position Overview: DCI is hiring a full-time Counselor. The School Counselor provides counseling and support to DCI students in the assigned grade level, as well as monitors attendance and provides attendance interventions. The School Counselor will be responsible for providing counseling that is preventive in design, developmental in implementation and supportive in areas of academic achievement and personal and social development. This position will also collaborate with appropriate personnel to ensure positive educational and counseling practices for the students.

Salary Range:  $64,349 - $108,691 (Starting salary is determined by education and years of relevant experience) 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree is required.

A Master's Degree in Counseling, Social Work or a related field from an accredited college or university is required.

  • Bilingual in Spanish (preferred).
  • Familiarity with Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), District of Columbia Municipal Regulations, Title 5 Education, The ASCA National Model: A Framework for School Counseling Programs, ASCA National Standards, ASCA School Counselor Competencies, ASCA Ethical Guidelines, ASCA School Counselor Performance Standards, and  NASW Ethical Guidelines.
  • Experience working closely with diverse families.
  • Knowledge about special education and 504 practices and regulations, particularly those pertaining to DC schools.
  • The ability to collaborate and work as part of a team.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong interest in, or experience with, language immersion, 1:1 technology, and IB Middle Years Program model.
  • Commitment to keeping current on best practices and evidence-based interventions for students
  • Commitment to ensuring access and achievement for our learners with exceptional learning needs.
  • Ability to use multiple technology platforms to guide instruction and communicate with students and families and proficiency with communicating using G-Suite tools, including Gmail, is preferred.
  • Clear a background check.

Key Qualities & Skills:

  • Ability to provide and lead efforts in Social Emotional Learning on the tier 1 and tier 2 levels.
  • Use all available data (grades, attendance, referrals) to identify students who may be in need of services.
  • Provide direct preventive and responsive services to students.
  • Address attendance accountability, support systems, and data management.
  • Ability to organize, plan, and implement counseling groups for students related to executive functioning, social skills, and other behaviorally related skills.
  • Monitor student attendance and implement attendance interventions as needed for students on the grade level.
  • Ability to support students in making decisions about their course work and scheduling. 
  • Ability to accept and implement feedback received for real-time improvement. 
  • Embrace professional development through attending coaching meetings, school/content-based sessions, and external development opportunities to deliver instruction at a high level. 
  • Collaborate with general and special educators, coordinators, and leadership on the development and management of the comprehensive school counseling program . 
  • High degree of communication through a variety of mediums with parents, students, and community partners.
  • Embrace French, Spanish, and Chinese cultures by leading and participating in cultural activities for faculty and students.
  • Other duties as assigned.
