Purpose
Divergent is transforming manufacturing through our Adaptive Production System (DAPS), revolutionizing how complex structures are designed, built, and assembled. We are seeking a highly experienced Senior Metrology & Inspection Specialist to lead inspection strategy and quality assurance across advanced manufacturing processes. This role requires independent judgment, deep expertise in metrology and GD&T, and the ability to influence inspection standards across teams. In addition to executing complex inspections, this position will drive process improvement initiatives and serve as a mentor across disciplines.
The Role
Precision Inspection & Measurement Execution
- Execute visual, dimensional, and functional inspections on complex machined and additively manufactured components using advanced metrology tools.
- Interpret engineering drawings and GD&T (ASME Y14.5) to develop and apply robust, fit-for-purpose inspection strategies.
- Independently determine and implement inspection methodologies across first article, in-process, and final inspections.
- Document and escalate non-conformances in compliance with AS9102, internal quality procedures, and regulatory standards.
- Maintain expert proficiency with hand tools and metrology systems, including calipers, micrometers, bore gauges, thread gauges, and optical comparators.
Strategy, Collaboration & Continuous Improvement
- Define and refine inspection strategies for additive-to-machined transitions, custom fixturing, and complex geometries.
- Serve as a cross-functional partner to production and engineering teams, providing actionable insights to improve part quality and upstream processes.
- Contribute to root cause analyses, corrective/preventive actions (CAPA), and internal audits.
- Lead initiatives that enhance inspection consistency, reduce variability, and increase efficiency.
- Author and update SOPs and inspection standards in partnership with Quality and Manufacturing Engineering.
Leadership & Mentorship
- Mentor inspectors, machinists, and engineers in blueprint interpretation, metrology best practices, and GD&T application.
- Promote a culture of quality and precision through structured coaching and knowledge sharing.
- Lead onboarding or training initiatives to strengthen the technical capabilities of the inspection team.
Basic Qualifications
- 7+ years of experience in high-precision manufacturing (e.g., aerospace, defense, automotive)
- Demonstrated mastery of GD&T (ASME Y14.5) and real-world application of inspection techniques
- Expert proficiency in using and selecting metrology tools based on part geometry and tolerances
- Track record of mentoring others and elevating team inspection standards
- Experience with AS9102 FAI documentation, NCRs, and quality system protocols
- Proven ability to influence process improvements and inspection methodology
Preferred Qualifications
- Familiarity with non-contact metrology systems (e.g., laser scanners, structured light)
- Working knowledge of QMS standards (AS9100, ISO 9001)
- Experience with additive manufacturing, CNC machining, and transitioning from prototype to production
- Proficiency with digital tools like NX, Teamcenter, or equivalent PLM/CAD systems
Work Environment
- This is a hands-on technical role for an inspection expert who thrives in a high-precision manufacturing environment, ensuring quality and driving continuous improvement in metrology practices.
Additional Requirements
- An on-site skills demonstration is required as part of the hiring process to evaluate technical proficiency. (< 60mins)
