
Metrology Lab Lead

Purpose
The Metrology Lab Lead ensures dimensional accuracy and quality in the production of critical aerospace and automotive components. This role requires advanced technical expertise, strategic thinking, and leadership capabilities. The Metrology Lab Lead not only executes complex measurement tasks but also develops and improves inspection methodologies, guides team efforts, and acts as a technical mentor within the quality organization.
The Role
Leadership & Collaboration
- Serve as a recognized domain expert in metrology, demonstrating leadership across multiple programs and projects.
- Mentor less-experienced team members; contribute to skills development and knowledge sharing within the Quality department.
- Provide daily tactical guidance to ensure team alignment with operational and quality goals.
- Partner cross-functionally with quality, manufacturing, engineering, and automation to implement quality improvements and resolve metrology-related issues.
Measurement Strategy & Execution
- Develop and guide complex measurement strategies aligned with product and process requirements.
- Co-own as directed the programming, set-up, operation, and optimization of advanced metrology equipment (e.g., GOM ScanBox, portable 3D laser scanners, CMMs,) towards production needs.
- Support production inspections, verify critical dimensions, and validate conformance to specifications.
- Able to operate and optimize programs of advanced metrology equipment such as Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMMs), automated optical measurement systems (ScanBox), portable 3D laser scanners to perform precise measurements of parts and assemblies.
Data Analysis & Optimization
- Analyze complex measurement datasets using tools such as Polyworks; identify trends and communicate actionable insights.
- Review and continuously improve inspection methodologies for efficiency, accuracy, and alignment with production workflows.
Documentation
- Develop and document procedures, maintain detailed records of measurement programs, inspection results, and any adjustments made to processes or equipment.
Quality System Compliance
- Maintain documentation to meet regulatory and internal QMS requirements.
- Support internal and external audits to demonstrate process conformance and equipment capability.
Problem Solving & Troubleshooting
- Use expert judgment to troubleshoot inspection issues and drive root cause investigations.
- Collaborate on cross-functional corrective and preventive action efforts (CAPA).
Training & Continuous Improvement
- Develop and deliver training on metrology equipment, software, and best inspection practices.
- Identify and implement continuous improvement initiatives to enhance product quality, reduce cycle times, and increase inspection reliability.
- Perform duties assigned by Quality Management Team.
Basic Qualifications
- Ability to lawfully access information and technology that is subject to US export controls
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related technical field.
- Deep understanding of dimensional metrology principles, GD&T, and part inspection workflows.
- Proficient in programming and operating metrology systems including CMMs and GOM ScanBox.
- Skilled in Polyworks for data analysis and report generation.
- Familiarity with CAD tools and interpreting engineering drawings.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving ability.
- Able to work independently with substantial latitude in judgment and decision-making.
- Flexible and adaptive in a fast-paced, high-volume production environment.
Work Environment
- This role is based in a dynamic manufacturing setting and may require standing and handling precision equipment for extended periods of time.
Pay Range
$127,260 - $174,690 USD
