DLR Group has an opening for a Senior Mechanical Engineer – Plumbing & Fire Protection
Position Summary
As a Senior Mechanical Engineer specializing in plumbing and fire protection, you will be responsible for leading design of mechanical systems for buildings across a variety of sectors including Higher Education, Culture & Performing Arts, Healthcare, K-12, Justice/Civic and Energy. You will lead a team of engineers and designers to produce high-quality plumbing and fire protection construction documents using Revit and manage project schedules to meet deliverable requirements. As part of the integrated design team, you will collaborate closely with other disciplines to produce highly integrated building designs.
The successful candidate will
- Collaborate with architects, other engineers, and clients as part of our integrated design process.
- Create and coordinate documents using Revit.
- Perform mechanical/plumbing calculations including code research.
- Perform fire protection calculations including code research.
- Write and review specifications.
- Review shop drawings, RFIs and submittals.
- Conduct site visits when needed.
- Manage mechanical project teams and/or interdisciplinary project teams.
- Develop plumbing, and fire protection designs from concept through completion of construction, including engineering design calculations, detailed engineering reports and narratives, and coordination of mechanical design requirements.
- Participate in and perform quality control of the plumbing and fire protection engineering plans and specifications.
- Support the development and maintenance of plumbing and fire protection document standards.
- Mentor staff in plumbing and fire protection engineering and lead/participate in the career management process.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Architectural Engineering (ABET-Acredited).
- Licensed Professional Engineer (PE).
- 10+ years of experience working as a mechanical engineer, including design of plumbing and fire suppression systems.
- Working knowledge of the design and construction process and the ability to understand and communicate with professionals of other disciplines.
- Knowledge of Autodesk Revit and AutoCAD.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- LEED accreditation.
- Experience with BIM including Autodesk Revit workflow.
- Knowledge of specialty fire suppression system design, including: Fire pumps, Preaction Systems, and Clean Agent Fire Extinguishing Systems.
- Knowledge of specialty plumbing system design, including: Medical Gas (ASSE 6060), Grease Waste, and Laboratory systems.

$84,700 - $131,300 USD
