Snapshot of the Role
The Senior Vice President, Scientific Services (SVP, SS) is a senior member of the dna Communications team with a critical role in determining the future and long-term success of the agency. You will have broad experience of scientific service and team management and will be able to navigate complex business situations while providing the team with leadership and guidance that reflects the dna values. As a leader, you'll be expected to take responsibility for the direction and efficient functioning of the business, including team motivation and support, marketing and new business and operational excellence.
The SVP, SS is responsible for the scientific and strategic excellence of accounts across the Medical Education and Communications groups of dna. As a member of dna’s leadership team, you'll oversee the team (permanent and freelance resource) responsible for the editorial development of content that ensures strategically relevant, high-quality deliverables are produced on time, supporting communications in line with specific client needs, while maintaining a high ethical standard and adhering to industry regulations and guidelines. The SVP, SS is integral to maintaining key client relationships built on strength of scientific knowledge and strategic insight, and works alongside account leads to drive the organic growth of the current accounts.
You will play a central role in identifying and converting new business opportunities from both new and existing clients. They will help team members in responding to briefs, developing insightful and impactful proposals that inspire both our clients and our team. They will motivate team members to be creative, pursue work that excites them and encourage curiosity, commitment and fun.
Key responsibilities
Client & Agency responsibilities
- The SVP, SS is the agency’s lead counsel from a scientific standpoint across all client’s business. They are a sounding board and trusted partner who provides strategic advice, insights into the latest industry developments and ensures that our programmes represent world-class medical education and communications services
- Oversees the content development across all accounts ensuring the creation of scientifically accurate and compelling materials. Assists in delivering content, assets and programmes that take into account the business objectives and competitive landscape the client is working in
- Ensures the team produce deliverables for clients that are audience appropriate and effectively respond to the client brief, ensuring content aligns with their objectives while maintaining high-quality standards and pushing the boundaries of creativity
- Ensures that all client accounts have the appropriate content resource assigned to the need, based on skill and expertise
- Provides strategic, creative and tactical input to work, and gives shape, coherence and direction to materials
- Actively identifies opportunities for organic growth – for both dna and the broader IPG DXTRA
Health Network - Represents the agency at meetings with senior clients and is able to provide consultancy at the highest level.
- Works alongside the Managing Director and senior leadership to set the strategic direction of dna, understanding the implications of the strategic plan and working to achieve the agency’s goals
- Ensuring team cohesion, making sure that team members feel valued and part of the team
- Keeping the team motivated by communicating clear tasks and actions. Striving to inspire others by example. Showing commitment, enthusiasm, positivity and being available for support and guidance
- Identifying and converting new business opportunities that are aligned with the strategic direction and priorities of the agency
- Ensuring the values are lived through the agency
Required skills and competencies
Scientific and strategic skills
- Deep knowledge and understanding of medical communications
- Knowledge of the healthcare environment and key trends, compliance requirements and topical issues
of interest - Proficiency in analysing healthcare data, market trends and competitive landscapes to derive actionable insights
- Strategic thinking and ability to advise clients on how best to achieve their business goals through communications activities across different channels and platforms
- Ability to identify and propose new projects and realise value for both clients and the agency
- Excellent scientific service skills, showing full understanding of dna content and creative development processes
- Able to oversee a content team in delivering across multiple client accounts and provide support as needed across the broader scientific services team
- Able to facilitate meetings and workshops, ability to conduct strategic and creative brainstorms
- Excellent written English, with the ability to adapt style and language for various audiences
- Excellent presentation skills, able to present clearly and in an engaging and persuasive style
- Able to synthesise strategically relevant and accurate materials and reports on scientific and medical advances
- Stakeholder engagement – excellent conversational skills and emotional intelligence. Able to build relationships with broad range of third parties from suppliers to leading clinical experts
- Fully conversant with the relevant codes of practice (ABPI/PMCPA, EFPIA and GPP codes of practice), able to advise both clients and team members of the requirements of these codes as they apply to our work
Required experience and qualifications
The SVP, SS is expected to have the following experience and qualifications in the majority of cases:
- 12+ years’ experience in medical communications or equivalent
- Experience of leading a content team to deliver successful and effective medical communications
- Experience of line management, coaching, mentoring and supporting junior team members to grow in terms of both confidence and skills
- Experience of being the lead counsel for clients, their first port of call for strategic advice
and insights - A strong science or medical background
- A postgraduate degree such as a MSc or PhD
