This is a 10-hour/week contractor role.

The Role

The Payroll Accounting Manager will join our team at a critical point in the continued evolution of our business. The successful candidate will be a well-rounded Payroll professional with significant experience in all aspects of payroll processing including payroll taxes, time & attendance reporting systems, and auditing payroll files for thoroughness and accuracy. This position is responsible for bi-weekly payroll processing for a growing, multi-state organization including, but not limited to, new hires, terminations, bonuses, leaves of absence (LOA), direct deposits, wage garnishments, vacation accruals, tax changes, healthcare premium deductions, 401(k) deductions, and stock options. The Payroll Accounting Manager will develop and implement standard Payroll procedures and will serve as the subject matter expert and internal escalation point for all Payroll related matters and ensure compliance in all areas of payroll. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Responsible for accurate and timely payrolls for all countries in compliance with local tax and labor regulations, including variable pay, stock, or other supplemental or non-recurring pay runs.
  • Responsible for the design and implementation of payroll tax strategy and compliance, including the oversight of payroll taxes.
  • Establish quality assurance systems and processes to create durable and repeatable payroll and tax processes.
  • Proactively identifies and resolves payroll discrepancies and determines the most appropriate method of communication to employees.
  • Ensures that payroll operations are conducted in accordance with Sarbanes-Oxley internal controls.
  • Prepares and maintains payroll records and reports, including standard and ad hoc reports to ensure data integrity, accuracy, and timeliness as required by Finance, HR, and Equity Stock Administration.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain standard operating procedures for Payroll.
  • Maintains payroll records in accordance with company and regulatory requirements.
  • Remains current on legislation and regulatory rulings that impact payroll or payroll tax to ensure compliance.
  • Provide support for tax audits and answer inquiries from various taxing jurisdictions.
  • Research, interpret and understand existing or revised tax codes, laws, or forms.
  • Maintains collaborative relationships with in-house counsel for definitive rulings and guidance on compliance issues and audit requests.
  • Defines, clarifies, and drives a common understanding of the business process for project success.
  • Provide ongoing coaching and feedback, recognizing and developing employees, identifying and managing risks, and completing daily management tasks.
  • Assists in researching payroll tax issues related to Stock Options, RSU’s, Gross Ups and Relocation.
  • Assists with relocation programs ensuring tax compliance.
  • Helps prepares and deliver effective organizational change management and communication.
  • Manages relationships with internal clients and all stakeholders.
  • Maintain relationships with third parties/vendors.
  • Works across organizational functions and boundaries and builds internal networks to effectively implement payroll solutions.

Required Skills

  • Comprehensive payroll knowledge including: payroll tax computations, exempt/non-exempt classification rules, pre and post-tax deductions, taxable and non-taxable income items, commission and bonuses, W-2 generations, and timekeeping systems
  • Strong leadership, administrative, organizational, managerial and communication skills
  • Ability to form strong partnerships across reporting relationships
  • Ability to analyze information, identify the root cause of an issue, and develop/implement approved solutions
  • Ability to multi-task and work in a fast-paced, changing environment
  • Ability to perform complex mathematical and payroll calculations
  • Ability to build queries and reports in Workday and organizational report writing tools
  • Excellent computer skills, including Microsoft Office software with an emphasis in Excel
  • Performs work with a high degree of latitude.
  • Demonstrated self-starter, ability to adapt rapidly to new information, and ability to inspire and foster a team environment.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced quickly changing environment with high volume. 
  • Passionate about continuous learning and serves as an effective change agent to grow skillsets and talents within the organization while accomplishing key initiatives and projects.

Qualifications 

  • 5-10+ years of payroll experience
  • Experience leading a remote payroll team at a public, high-tech company
  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, or related field
  • CPA or CPP preferred
  • Possesses expert knowledge in the following areas of Payroll; processing, corrections, FLSAOT, taxes (multi-state and reciprocity), employee payroll tax maintenance, gross-to-net calculations, taxable fringe benefit, and other related payroll tax tasks.
  • Involvement in implementing a global payroll solution 
  • Sarbanes Oxley (SOX) compliance experience.
