Business Analyst

Downing Capital is a Venture Capital and Private Equity fund based in New York.Members ofthe Downing Capital Group team are investor-entrepreneurs. We are a new breed of VC/PE firm: members of our team are business builders, not merely capital providers. Our unique model turns conventional VC on its head: we begin with our own business ideas, recruit management teams to execute on them, and then capitalize these ventures.

The vast majority of the firm’s capital will be invested in ideas incubated internally. We are seeking a Business Analystto join one of our S.W.A.T. team. In this role, the Business Analyst will collaborate closely with Downing's investment team and portfolio company management to define and execute strategic projects, from defining go-to-market strategies to executing operational improvements and supporting M&A activities. Leverage strong analytical skills and a proactive mindset to enhance managerial processes and foster growth both at the fund and/or portfolio level.

How you’ll make an impact:  

Strategic Project Execution:

  • Collaborate with portfolio companies to define and execute strategic projects including go-to-market strategies, process implementation, and managerial KPIs.
  • Translate quarterly strategic goals into actionable items for the team.

Operational Support:

  • Independently manage vendor selection and negotiation processes ensuring optimal terms and alignment with project goals.
  • Implement systems and processes to optimize efficiency within portfolio companies and at the fund level.
  • Assist in refining and optimizing business processes and systems to drive efficiency and effectiveness.

Leadership and Collaboration:

  • Actively participate in the CEO's daily activities, including attending board meetings and updates with portfolio company management teams.
  • Develop the capability over time to make decisions on certain aspects of the firm's management on behalf of the CEO.
  • Provide support to colleagues to enhance their effectiveness and assist with their development plans.

Data and Reporting:

  • Develop and maintain robust reporting mechanisms to track progress on key initiatives.
  • Interpret complex data and provide actionable insights through advanced financial modeling and comprehensive data-driven presentations.
    • Support fund-level operations by implementing managerial processes, systems, and Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A) activities.
    • Participate in M&A deals, providing strategic support and operational insights.
    • Conduct investment research analysis

Fund-Level Contributions:

Continuous Improvement:

  • Stay updated on industry best practices and trends to continuously improve strategic execution and operational excellence.
  • Foster strong relationships with stakeholders across portfolio companies and the fund to ensure alignment and collaboration.

What you’ll bring to the table:

  • 2-4 years of experience at a leading management consulting firm.
  • Outstanding academic credentials with a bachelor's or master’s degree.
  • Ability to work within a time zone no more than 3 hours different from EST.
  • Flexibility to travel internationally for periods of at least two full weeks as needed, comprising no more than 10-20% of the total working time.
  • Strong analytical acumen with the ability to interpret complex data and provide actionable insights.
  • Proven ability to interact effectively with C-Suite executives and senior management, demonstrating strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Executor/entrepreneurial mindset with a proactive approach to solving problems.
  • Advanced financial modeling skills and proficiency in creating comprehensive data-driven presentations.
  • Highly organized and structured with exceptional attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities effectively.
  • Experience in implementing processes, systems, and managerial KPIs with a track record of driving operational improvements.
  • Proficiency in using Microsoft Office and other relevant software tools.
  • A proactive and adaptable attitude in a dynamic work environment with a commitment to continuous improvement.
  • Demonstrated experience in a strategic or operational support role, preferably within a portfolio company or investment fund context.

Contract Terms:

  • Contract position; minimum commitment of 12 months (ideally 24 months)
  • Depending on the nature of the project, you may work directly at the fund or be integrated into one of Downing’s portfolio companies.
