About the Role:
The Associate Scientist will be part of the Research & Development team responsible for bringing new and innovative personal care products to life. This role will research and develop new soap products and work with our operations team to support continuous improvement of existing products. Specifically, this role will work in our R&D laboratory to prototype new products and evaluate new ingredients, fragrances, colorants, and designs.
Dr. Squatch is best known for our bar soaps, and this role will be a key contributor to the development efforts for new soap launches. An interest in contributing to new product ideas and excitement about new product development is key. The ideal candidate will balance the technical and scientific requirements of the role with the creative side of new product development and problem solving.
This role will report to the R&D Senior Scientist.
This is a full-time role with company benefits based in Marina Del Rey, California.
The anticipated base compensation range for this role will be $65,000 - $80,000. Compensation will be commensurate with the candidate's experience and local market rates.
What You'll Do:
- Identify key gaps in the market for men’s soap products from both a conceptual and technical perspective, with a narrow focus on products that fit our brand voice and mission
- Become an expert in making cold process soap at the laboratory scale
- Create soap batches in our research and development laboratory to test out new concepts for ingredients, design, and fragrance
- Research raw materials and build relationships with suppliers to source and test unique ingredients for our products
- Manage timelines of research and development laboratory projects to support execution of new product launches
- Coordinate with cross-functional partners including Operations, Marketing, and the rest of the Product team to ensure products can be effectively produced at scale and successfully launched via marketing campaigns
- Support raw material testing for supply chain projects, including onboarding new suppliers and supporting quality assurance
- Ensure laboratory is stocked with necessary raw materials and equipment for batching
- Maintain organization and documentation of laboratory according to GLP and GDP standards
About You:
- Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, or similar science
- Solid technical background in laboratory work with 1-2 years of laboratory experience
- Experience in cosmetic product development, preferably natural products and/or cold process soaps
- Familiarity with GLP and GDP, preferably in an FDA-regulated environment
- Strong interest in health and wellness
- Comfort with a rapidly evolving work environment, and experience taking initiative
- Excellent communication and presentation skills
