Senior Software Engineer, Platform Services

Chicago

DRW is a diversified trading firm with over 3 decades of experience bringing sophisticated technology and exceptional people together to operate in markets around the world. We value autonomy and the ability to quickly pivot to capture opportunities, so we operate using our own capital and trading at our own risk.

Headquartered in Chicago with offices throughout the U.S., Canada, Europe, and Asia, we trade a variety of asset classes including Fixed Income, ETFs, Equities, FX, Commodities and Energy across all major global markets. We have also leveraged our expertise and technology to expand into three non-traditional strategies: real estate, venture capital and cryptoassets.

We operate with respect, curiosity and open minds. The people who thrive here share our belief that it’s not just what we do that matters–it's how we do it. DRW is a place of high expectations, integrity, innovation and a willingness to challenge consensus.

The Platform Services team builds self-service platform products that simplify how development teams interact with infrastructure. Its goal is to let teams focus on delivering business value rather than on platform integrations and infrastructure complexity. Examples include:

Access Management – Work towards a single source of truth for who can do what at DRW. Simplify engineering's approach to Identity and Access Management (IAM) by providing a platform that can be used to manage access across DRW's proprietary and third-party systems.

Limit Monitoring – Create a platform for defining and monitoring firmwide trading limits across domains like Risk, Treasury, and Compliance.

Data Tables – Provide a best-of-breed service for managing lightweight datasets, with built-in support for temporal (point-in-time) data, access controls, APIs, and front end.

Usage – Normalize the collection, storage, and presentation of usage data to provide insight into how services and data are being used and why.

As a Senior Software Engineer, you will define, develop, and own services that form the foundation of DRW's Unified Platform.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Architect and deliver complex features end-to-end with minimal oversight.
  • Turn high-level requirements into solutions, drawing on a deep understanding of the business.
  • Maintain a constant focus on testing, reliability, scalability, and maintainability.
  • Design systems, model data, and write code across a variety of languages and technologies.
  • Evolve legacy code alongside greenfield development.
  • Learn and promote new technologies with a focus on best practices.
  • Engage in on-call and production support activities.
  • Contribute to system and architecture design discussions.
  • Challenge ideas and participate in defining the path forward.

Required Qualifications:

  • 7+ years of experience in server-side development using major programming languages such as Java, Ruby, Python, Clojure, or C#.
  • Strong understanding of system and architecture design principles, especially in the context of distributed systems.
  • Ability to own projects, define requirements, and lead their development.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, with the capacity to work on both software development and support tasks.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Experience with Platform as a Service (PaaS) and the transformation of services into products.
  • Experience with IAM concepts such as RBAC/ABAC, OAuth 2.0/OIDC, or SCIM.
  • Experience with temporal data modeling and designing APIs consumed by other teams.
  • Experience building real-time or event-driven systems.

The annual base salary range for this position is $175,000 to $275,000 depending on the candidate’s experience, qualifications, and relevant skill set. The position is also eligible for an annual discretionary bonus. In addition, DRW offers a comprehensive suite of employee benefits including group medical, pharmacy, dental and vision insurance, 401k (with discretionary employer match), short and long-term disability, life and AD&D insurance, health savings accounts, and flexible spending accounts.
