Engineering Manager

Job Purpose:

As an Engineering Manager, you will be responsible for driving the technical vision and development of your squad's software products. You will manage and inspire your squad to deliver high-quality, innovative solutions that meet business objectives and exceed customer expectations.

Key accountabilities:

  • Co-own and drive the delivery of your squad’s OKRs with product and design counterparts
  • Make sure your squad members understand requirements and break down work to small, independently releasable pieces
  • Work with your squad to build a delivery plan which details the key dates and deliverables
  • Regularly and effectively communicate delivery plan & progress with stakeholders
  • Execute delivery plan in an Agile way (being Kanban or Scrum) including making and communicating adjustments to the plan, removing blocks, overcoming difficulties, getting resources/support from other teams - infrastructure, Data Science, Data Engineering etc., and discussing, making and communicating trade-offs
  • Be responsible for end-to-end software development of your squad from story writing, coding, and testing, to shipping software regularly and product support
  • Play a hands-on role in development. The extent will depend on the needs of the squad. For a mature squad, you are expected to stay hands-on coding up to 60% while for a newly formed squad it might be 40%
  • Enable the squad to deliver high quality and secure software via upskilling squad members, setting up high quality standards and continuously measuring quality and security standards
  • Continually look for opportunities and drive for improvements in terms of technical excellence, best engineering practice, cross-team collaboration and standards setting across the entire sub-domain
  • Provide Technical leadership leading and guiding the squad to deliver the best technical solution
  • Work with senior engineering manager and/or director to build hiring plan, hire and onboard new squad members
  • Form strong relationships and work closely with product, commercial, design and client team counterparts
  • Management of the engineers within the squad. Ensuring they understand expectations, help them build career development plan, continuously review the delivery plan spotting opportunities for them and carry out cyclical HR processes including performance and salary reviews

Experience required

  • Hands on software engineering experience
  • Cloud native software engineering experience is a must
  • Good experience in dotnet full stack
  • Experience in technical solutions design and architecture
  • Be able to understand business requirement and translate to technical implementation
  • Hands on experience in development
  • Build connections with other teams and maintain the relationship so that you know who to ask for help when needed
  • Business and commercial understanding
  • Good stakeholder management experience
  • Good experience of mentoring the team members
  • Understanding of product's software eco system
  • Strong people and performance management experience
