Role Summary:
The animal care associate will assist with the oversight of day-to-day operations in animal care and husbandry, to ensure a humane and ethical environment. Additionally, they will provide hands-on support for in vivo research efforts. Attention to detail, adherence to all Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) standard operating procedures, policies, and guidelines, and knowledge of laboratory animal care regulations are essential.
This role is based in Waltham, MA without the possibility of being a remote role. Applicants must be able to relocate to the area. This position is considered essential and as such may require weekend, holiday, and off hour coverage.
Primary Responsibilities Include:
- Assist with the oversight of routine husbandry tasks for resident colony, including feeding, watering and cage changing; perform husbandry tasks as needed
- Assist in the general upkeep, maintenance, and sanitization of physical plant
- Assist with ordering, receipt, and stocking of all supply inventories, evaluate all incoming orders for accuracy
- Assist with daily monitoring of resident colony health for signs of illness, distress, or abnormal behavior; report findings promptly
- Provide prescribed care and treatment to any affected animals
- Perform all assigned hands-on technical and procedural duties in support of in vivo research efforts
- Assist with observations and reporting on neuromuscular behavioral studies
- Perform various routes of agent administration (especially lateral tail vein IV), collection of biofluids and tissues
- Maintain accurate critical records (collect, document, and management of study data; facility related data)
- Ensure adherence to IACUC approved protocols, policies, and all relevant regulations
- Operate within controlled environments and follow all safety protocols and guidelines
- Assist with breeding program and colony management, as trained
- Houses and logs newly arriving animal orders and ensures orders accuracy
Education, Knowledge & Skill Requirements:
- 2+ years’ experience working with rodents in a research facility
- Must be reliable and able to self-organize and self-motivate in order to plan and execute daily tasks in a timely manner
- Must be willing to participate in a dynamic, fast-paced team environment, while demonstrating a focus on individual accountability for attention to detail in delivering quality and consistent results in the execution of all duties.
- AALAS certification at ALAT level is preferred
- Proficiency in handling and restraint of rodents
- Proficiency in various routes of agent administration in rodents (IV, IP, IG, SC, PO, IM)
- Experience with husbandry tasks and monitoring of animals for abnormalities and/or common health issues
- Experience with rodent biofluid, tissue and organ collection
- Have a strong interpersonal verbal and written communication skills
- Have a strong commitment to providing qualify research service support and dedicated to providing humane animal care
- Must be able to lift and physically move up to 50 pounds
- Must be able to work from a standing position for prolonged time periods and perform repetitive motion tasks
- Maintain positive work atmosphere by behaving and communicating in a professional manner with coworkers, research staff, managers, and leadership
- Must be available to support any weekend, holiday, emergency, and after-hour operational responsibilities
- Possess competency in the use of Microsoft Office for the use of communication and data entry (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
