About the Role

The Stock & Fulfillment Associate is responsible for the day-to-day execution of inventory intake, organization, and order fulfillment. This role focuses on receiving shipments, unpacking and inspecting stock for damage, confirming quantities against packing slips, entering and updating inventory in Shopify, and pricing and tagging all sellable books. The associate organizes and stores inventory in the fulfillment space, separates stock for online orders versus shop floor needs, and coordinates transfers of floor stock to the Stout storefront.

The Stock & Fulfillment Associate also fulfills online orders by reviewing incoming orders, pulling inventory, creating shipping labels, packing shipments accurately, and ensuring orders are sent out on time and in good condition. This role communicates discrepancies, missing items, or damaged stock to the Stout team and assists in resolving fulfillment issues as they arise. From time to time, the position may include limited salesfloor duties, supporting customers in the shop as needed.

Key Responsibilities

Inventory and Fulfillment

  • Complete inventory intake (including new library acquisitions): Unpack and quality check, Price & Tag Books, shelve.
  • Fulfill off-floor orders (including online orders and special orders), Ensure outgoing shipments are packed carefully and collected by the carrier. Communicate with management to ensure timely communications regarding orders.
  • Store inventory in fulfillment space and send floor stock to Stout.
  • Assist with other duties as assigned. These may include: warehouse reorganization, spatial changes, and activities to further the development of the store

Customer Service, Sales, and Events

  • Greet and assist visitors with a friendly and courteous manner.  
  • Provide accurate and clear information on merchandise, events, and the story of Stout Books.
  • Complete financial transactions, including sales, returns, credits, and applicable discounts, efficiently and accurately.
  • Provide wrapping service.

Operations and Maintenance

  • Keep the storage areas organized and clean.
  • Complete opening and closing procedures.

Required education, skills, abilities and competencies

  • Experience in organizing inventory and basic accounting (particularly Shopify) preferred.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated punctuality and dependability.
  • Interpersonal communication skills. Ability to communicate problems and ensure constructive problem resolution.
  • Previous experience with book inventory management is a plus.
  • Computer literate and internet savvy. Experience with word processors, spreadsheets, Shopify, and the Google Suite preferred.
  • Flexible schedule. Able to work evening and weekend events if needed

Essential Functions

  • This position is expected to be fully in person. It is based at the Richmond fulfillment center with travel to the San Francisco bookstore, working approximately 20-24 hours per week (4 days/week with some occasional extra days per week) and occasional evenings and weekends to support shop operations. 
  • Prolonged periods of sitting and standing, walking, bending and reaching with frequent use of hands for writing, carrying, lifting, taping. 
  • Ability to lift and carry books, office supplies and equipment weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others. 
  • Requires travel between Richmond and San Francisco.
