As Senior Product Counsel, you'll have a broad and diverse range of responsibilities, bringing curiosity, creativity and sound judgment to facilitate product innovation with legal guidance on financial service product and feature development within a complex regulatory framework. You will build strong relationships and partner with our product teams and more senior counsel to develop new offerings and advise on legal risk and regulatory compliance. The legal issues you'll encounter are cutting edge and always evolving. As we expand our offerings, your ideas and contributions will make an immediate impact.
The ideal candidate will have experience in the fintech and/or banking space. The successful candidate will be creative, knowledgeable in financial services, and skilled in researching and mastering complex legal topics. You will also be skilled in providing accurate, practical, and actionable advice to non-lawyers in clear language. You will be comfortable working with the unknown in a fast-paced and dynamic environment, capable of an expert understanding of a legal issue and also separating the practical from the academic. You will be counted on to think strategically and operate from a place of ‘yes, and’ to get our business clients from 0 to 1 - all while mitigating regulatory risk and putting customers first. You will be managing numerous workstreams necessitating strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize.
This position is required to be in our Mountain View, CA headquarters at least two days per week. The US base salary range for this full-time position is $185,000 - $225,000 + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location.
What You’ll Do:
- Work as part of the Legal team and cross-functionally on a variety of product matters and marketing questions, including serving as the lead lawyer for the Product Legal group
- Advise on a wide range of consumer finance regulatory issues regarding existing and new products (including from the initial stages of product development through launch), including providing legal and regulatory feedback and advice on:
- existing product features,
- new Product features,
- advertising and marketing,
- payments (ACH, Card Network), and
- customer support
- Look around corners and creatively solve problems for the business as they plan, build, and execute their product roadmap
- Develop, share and deploy knowledge and best practices for working with payment processors and financial partners
- Assist with state and federal examinations and independent audits, including discussing product decisions and features with regulators and independent auditors and examiners
- Assist with litigation matters
- Assist with developing and providing training to business units on policies, procedures and developments in laws, regulations and best practices
- Other duties as assigned
What We’re Looking For:
- 10+ years of experience of relevant legal experience
- Juris Doctor degree and licensed to practice law in the U.S. and in good standing in at least one jurisdiction
- Strong knowledge of consumer finance regulations, including FDCPA, Reg E, Reg Z, Reg B, FCRA, and/or UDAAP
- Experience with card payment association rules/operating regulations and NACHA rules a strong plus
- Management experience combined with a collaborative style and someone who can work under pressure with little or no supervision
- A deep thinker who can communicate clearly under pressure
- Passion for exploring new opportunities and tough challenges with a sense of ownership and urgency, high energy and enthusiasm
- Experience in a start-up environment preferred
- Interest or experience in Government Relations is a plus
- Experience with bankruptcy law a plus
