About the Role

We’re looking for a hands-on part-time or full-time Facilities Manager with a strong background in mechanical engineering to oversee the operations, maintenance, and continuous improvement of our headquarters and R&D spaces. In this role, you will manage day-to-day facilities needs while ensuring operational efficiency, safety, and regulatory compliance in a complex environment that includes labs, pilot-scale production, and office spaces.

This position also acts as the central point of contact for all facility and general office-related needs—serving as the go-to resource for employees and leadership alike. A successful candidate will be highly people-oriented and customer service-driven, with a proactive, solutions-focused mindset and the ability to build strong relationships across all teams. You’ll take ownership of ensuring the space operates smoothly, regularly identifying areas for improvement, and independently initiating projects to enhance the working environment. We are a small, but scrappy team and it is important this person have a “no job too big, or too small” mindset.

Please note – we are only considering candidates that can reliably be onsite within 30 minutes (should the need to respond to an emergency situation arise).

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee the maintenance, repair, and operation of building systems including HVAC, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, compressed air, and life safety systems
  • Serve as the primary liaison for all general office operations, coordinating facility services, space planning, office equipment, and workplace needs
  • Partner with R&D and production teams to support equipment installation, calibration, and utility needs
  • Lead preventive maintenance programs and optimize building system performance
  • Identify and implement energy efficiency, sustainability, and safety initiatives;
  • Serve as primary liaison with outside contractors, vendors, and service providers
  • Proactively assess and address office and facility needs—regularly identifying improvement opportunities and independently launching projects
  • Collaborate closely with HR and the Appleton, MN manufacturing plant (as well as future production sites) to support workplace safety programs, including incident reporting, emergency response procedures, and regulatory compliance
  • Lead and manage Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) initiatives, including permits, audits, and emergency response plans.
  • Oversee lab and pilot plant facilities, ensuring proper mechanical system operation
  • Manage facilities projects such as lab renovations, system upgrades, or space planning
  • Operate with a fiscally responsible mindset, always seeking ways to maximize existing resources, reduce costs, and avoid unnecessary external spend—while ensuring workplace safety, operational effectiveness, and long-term sustainability remain top priorities
  • Maintain accurate documentation of facility systems, maintenance schedules, and regulatory compliance records
  • Provide hands-on, timely response to facility issues or urgent requests

Qualifications

  • Associate degree or formal vocational training in mechanical engineering or equivalent experience preferred.
  • 5+ years of relevant facilities management experience required, ideally in an R&D, food production, or lab-based environment; experience having additional workplace/administrative/office management responsibilities ideal.
  • Strong knowledge of HVAC, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems; experience with lab gases, compressed air, and process equipment preferred.
  • Highly customer service-oriented and approachable, with excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Proven ability to build positive working relationships across departments and levels, acting as a collaborative, go-to resource for workplace needs.
  • Working knowledge of local building codes, OSHA regulations, and EHS compliance
  • Project management experience with ability to oversee contractors, timelines, and budgets.
  • Hands-on, solutions-oriented, and comfortable working in fast-paced, dynamic environments.
  • Proficiency with facilities management software, building automation systems (BAS), and CMMS tools a plus.

Bonus Skills

  • Experience in the food, biotech, or life sciences industries
  • Familiarity with sustainability initiatives, energy management, or LEED certification processes

We develop our salaries using market data, internal benchmarks, and candidate experience to ensure fairness and competitiveness. All full-time team members receive:

Compensation: The expected base salary range for this role (based in Alameda, CA/full-time) is $105,000 – 135,000 per year. Final compensation will be based on skills, experience, and overall contribution to the role.

 

Additional Information & Requirements

Depending on the interest of the candidate, this could be either a full-time or part-time, regular position based at our headquarters in Alameda, CA. We are only considering local candidates who can reliably be on-site within 30 minutes in the event of an emergency or urgent need.

While the typical work schedule is during standard business hours, this role requires schedule flexibility to respond to off-hours needs (evenings, weekends, etc.) as necessary.

The physical demands outlined below represent those required to successfully perform the essential functions of this role:

  • Regularly required to talk and hear
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
  • Frequent standing for extended periods, as well as climbing stairs, ladders, and elevated work platforms
