Product Manager, Knowledge Graph, Education (12-Month Fixed-Term)

Redwood City, CA (Remote)

Learning Commons aims to scale proven teaching and learning practices to benefit every learner by building AI infrastructure that better connects the way students learn to the tools they learn with.

The Team

At Learning Commons, we operate at the intersection of technology, research, and philanthropy. We pair product development with grantmaking to scale proven teaching and learning practices for the benefit of every learner. We aim to bring learning science into the tools educators and students use every day.

Our work is grounded in a deep belief: when technology reflects the realities of classrooms and the science of how students learn, it can meaningfully strengthen teaching and unlock new possibilities for students. The rise of generative AI offers us a once-in-a-generation opportunity to dramatically accelerate the translation of research insights into practical, classroom-ready tools; tools that honor teachers’ expertise, adapt to students’ needs, and make effective learning practices easier to access, implement, and sustain.

In today’s fragmented edtech landscape, school districts are often left piecing together products that don’t always align with curricula or instructional needs. While AI holds enormous potential to support teachers and students, it can only deliver on that promise when grounded in research, high-quality educational data, and expert evaluation. That’s why we’re building open, public-purpose infrastructure — datasets, rubrics, and resources — that help raise the standard for educational tools and create more consistent, impactful learning experiences for all students and teachers.

The Opportunity

We are seeking a Product Manager for a 12-month fixed-term position on the Knowledge Graph team. As a Product Manager on the Knowledge Graph team, you'll help build the data layer for AI in education. AI tools for teachers and students are only as good as the data behind them — and the data they need sits scattered across incompatible formats, academic journals, and proprietary systems, so developers spend their time stitching sources together instead of building. The Knowledge Graph turns that fragmented material into structured, queryable infrastructure — connecting what students are expected to learn, the materials they learn from, and the research on how they learn best, all grounded in learning science.

This is a chance to shape a foundation that's still being built. As the graph expands into new subjects and kinds of data, you'll help decide what it covers and how much developers can rely on it, putting you at the center of how research-grounded AI reaches classrooms. It's a rare product surface — few roles combine data modeling, developer experience, and public-purpose education data in one seat — and it rewards a PM who likes to be hands-on and close to the details. You'll have real ownership from the start, with room to grow as the graph scales.

What You'll Do

  • Own datasets end to end — Take each dataset from acquisition and licensing through modeling, ingestion, and launch. Write the product docs that define the work clearly enough for engineering to build and ship without rework.
  • Partner with our users — Work closely with the developers and build partners who use the graph to understand their needs and where they get stuck, and spot opportunities for the graph to solve those problems. Help shape the API surfaces they build on, across the REST API and beyond.
  • Plan the work, short and long term — Use partner evidence to shape the roadmap — which data to bring in and how it should grow — and plan the near-term work with engineering so the team ships against a clear, current plan.
  • Work hands-on in the data — Open the source data yourself, run coverage and gap analyses, and verify what ships against the source. Decide how a new source maps onto the graph, when to reuse the model and when to extend it, and set clear, testable acceptance criteria engineers can build against.
  • Keep the cross-functional team aligned — Work across engineering, Trust, partnerships, tech writers, and marketing to move each launch forward and keep everyone working from the same plan.

What You'll Bring

  • 3–5 years of product management experience with a track record of shipping, preferably data products, APIs, or developer-facing platforms
  • Education or edtech grounding — You've built products in education or worked in the field, and you understand how curricula, academic standards, and classrooms work well enough to judge what developers serving schools actually need
  • Works well with deep technical experts — You partner with engineers and data experts as a credible peer: you ask sharp questions, pressure-test tradeoffs, and write up complex technical decisions clearly enough for developers to build on
  • Hands-on data fluency and modeling judgment — You personally open raw data files (JSONL, CSV), write queries (SQL, Cypher, or similar), and pull your own counts rather than delegating the check; you can reason about entities and relationships, sketch the nodes and edges for a new dataset, and tell a data gap from a modeling gap
  • Strong product sense — You understand what the people building on your product are trying to do and where they get stuck, and turn that into priorities
