Intern, Software Engineering (Data Science)
Eikon Therapeutics is a new biopharmaceutical company employing revolutionary technology at the intersection of chemistry, engineering, computation, and biology to discover novel treatments for life-threatening diseases. Eikon’s discovery platform is built on groundbreaking innovations from its founders (Nobel Prize, 2014), culminating in the creation of microscopes which enable real time, molecular-resolution measurements of protein movement in living cells, thereby unlocking otherwise intractable classes of proteins as drug targets.
Position
This 10-week summer internship provides an opportunity to gain hands-on experience within the Software Engineering and Applied Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AI/ML) function at a drug discovery company, applying computational methods to address biological questions in a collaborative, fast-paced research and development environment. In this role, you will design and/or apply AI/ML workflows that help answer biological questions relevant to drug discovery. This internship emphasizes translating concepts into scalable, agent-driven technical solutions, contributing to internal tools, methodologies, and prototypes of systems that accelerate drug discovery and support scientific decision-making.
About You
You are passionate about using AI/ML to accelerate drug discovery. You enjoy solving complex technical challenges and experimenting with new model architectures, data pipelines, and deployment approaches. You are analytical, curious, and comfortable working with large datasets and evolving technologies. You enjoy collaborating with engineers and scientists and are motivated to apply research concepts to practical applications.
What You’ll Do
- Support exploration, prototyping, and evaluation of agentic-driven solutions for real-world applications.
- Assist with development and testing of AI/ML model architectures, workflows, and experimental pipelines.
- Support prompt engineering, model fine-tuning, and performance evaluation of natural language processing (NLP) and large language model(LLM)-based systems.
- Prepare, clean, and analyze datasets to support model training, testing, and validation activities.
- Analyze experimental results to inform model iteration, optimization, and design decisions.
- Collaborate with cross-functional engineering and scientific teams to translate research concepts into scalable solutions.
- Document experimental approaches, technical findings, and prototype development.
- Present internship project outcomes and key learnings.
Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in a graduate-level degree program in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Bioinformatics, or related disciplines.
- Graduate-level coursework or equivalent experience in machine learning or artificial intelligence.
- Strong programming skills in Python.
- Experience working with libraries that support agentic development, such as LangChain, LangGraph, Hugging Face, RAG systems, etc.
- Familiarity with agentic systems.
- Experience working with LLM or NLP techniques, including, but not limited to, embeddings, prompt engineering, fine-tuning, and reinforcement learning.
- Experience working with real-world datasets, including data cleaning, analysis, and experimentation.
- Strong analytical thinking and problem-solving skills.
- Values clear communication, empathy, and mutual respect.
- Ability to clearly communicate technical ideas and experimental results.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment while managing independent technical deliverables.
- Must be available to work full-time (40 hours per week) during core business hours for a minimum of 10 weeks during the summer internship program.
The expected hourly pay range for this role is $42 - $48/hour. Placement within this range is determined based on education level.
Eikon is proud to be an equal opportunity employer and will consider all qualified applicants for employment.
We are currently not accepting any new third-party agencies or firms at this time. Please do not forward unsolicited agency resumes to our website, employees or Human Resources. Eikon Therapeutics will not pay fees to any third-party agency or firm associated with unsolicited resumes.
