Staff Engineer, Flow Cell Process Development

We are seeking a driven and experienced Staff Engineer, Flow Cell Process Development to help shape our manufacturing processes in tandem with product development. This role is ideal for a flexible, hands-on engineer who is excited to help build an exceptional company and launch groundbreaking products. As part of the Process Development team, you will work closely with both technology and product development groups, with a core focus on translating innovations from the lab into scalable, production-ready solutions. This role will be working on developing the flow cell component of our products. Our products incorporate cutting edge technology from synthetic, organic, nucleotide, enzyme, and surface chemistry disciplines, which makes this role highly integrative. This role will report to our Associate Director, Process Development and will be a San Diego based, on-site role.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
- Lead complex investigations, troubleshooting product performance and manufacturing yield issues
- Collaboratively drive process improvement projects by driving execution of experimental design, data analysis, presentation of outcomes, and implementation of changes
- Design, plan, and execute experiments across a wide number of disciplines including flow cell and surface chemistry
- Drive key projects in the flow cell area to support the transfer and commercialization of products/processes, including development and implementation of surface deposition, metrology, and assembly processes
- Drive the development of supplier partners to support successful component development and product commercialization
- Plan in-process quality control approach for flow cell products and processes
- Design, plan, and execute product and process characterization experiments and stability studies
- Build documentation for user and system requirements, participate in product design and development, and support integration and testing activities
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering, chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology, bioengineering, engineering physics, etc with 7+ years in similar fields
- Experience in both Development (new product introduction) and Operations settings, preferably with experience commercializing products in a fast-paced surface chemistry, semiconductor, or chemistry environment
- Experimental design and statistical data analysis and visualization (such as JMP or R) are required; additional capabilities with image analysis and scripting are a plus
- Experience in pilot/production environments, including tech transfer activities, sustaining support, and continuous improvement is required
- Experience with production surface chemistry deposition processes (CVD, ALD, oxygen plasma, etc.) is strongly preferred
- Experience with implementing and sustaining complex manufacturing equipment and processes, in particular Liquid Handling Robots (LHR—e.g., Hamilton, Tecan, Opentrons, etc) is strongly preferred
- Experience working directly with vendors and/or contract manufacturers is a plus
- Proficiency with chemical process operations and related analytical techniques and metrology including spectrophotometry, ellipsometry, AFM, LCMS, etc is a plus
- Creative and independent thinker; excellent communication skills; good team worker; ability to multitask and work independently; and ability to find creative solutions to problems are required
- Ability to resolve complex problems, tasks, and decisions with a team is required
- Experience mentoring junior engineers is a plus
- Ability to produce high quality work with great attention to detail in a rapid and efficient manner

Base Compensation Pay Range:
- $125,000 - $165,000
In addition to base compensation noted above, you will be eligible for stock options, discretionary annual bonus, no cost health insurance plans, 401k with company match, and flexible paid time off.
Please note: Base compensation will depend on multiple factors, including geographic location, qualifications, and experience.
