Job Description

Elwood is seeking an experienced and ambitious Finance and Tax Director to help fuel our growth by identifying and pursuing new opportunities. As part of the role, the individual will have broad responsibilities for Finance as well as UK and non-UK tax matters, The role requires the individual to work closely with internal members of staff and external professional advisors and auditors.

This position requires deep expertise in tax regulations, financial operations, investor reporting and strategic decision-making. Responsibilities include managing the financial operations for the Group, managing tax liabilities, ensuring financial and tax compliance, improving financial systems, and driving strategic financial decisions to achieve business goals.

Key Responsibilities: 

Strategic Planning: Develop and implement long-term financial and tax strategies aligned with the Group's overall objectives and in compliance with regulations. 

Financial Management: Oversee all financial operations, including budgeting, forecasting, cash management, and financial reporting across the Group's various companies to support business growth. 

Reporting & Compliance: Ensure accurate and timely preparation of financial statements, reports, and tax filings including corporation tax returns and tax disclosure preparation for financial statements, US tax compliance, R&D claim assistance and the preparation of annual partnership statements as required. 

Audit & Assurance: Managing statutory audits across multiple entities, ensuring compliance with local and international accounting standards. Coordinating with external auditors, tax advisers, and regulatory bodies to ensure successful audit completion and transparent financial reporting.

Employer related tax filings: PSA filing, payroll approval, employment related securities filings, employee share option plan relevant filings.  

Ad hoc Tax advisory: Responding to ad-hoc tax queries relating to corporate, employment & indirect tax matters, liaising with professional advisers as necessary. Ensuring ongoing implementation of group Transfer Pricing model.

Financial and Tax Analysis: Provide in-depth financial and tax analysis and insights into business performance, identifying areas for improvement, cost reduction, and revenue generation. 

Stakeholder Relations: Liaise with and report to internal stakeholders, the board, investors, banks, and auditors including the preparation of board packs and reports as required.

Risk Management: Assess financial and tax risks and develop strategies to mitigate them, protecting the group's financial health. 

System & Policy Development: Implement and maintain robust financial systems, policies, and procedures to ensure strong internal controls and efficient operations.

Stakeholder Communication: Articulating complex tax and finance concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders. 

Leadership & Team Management: Line management responsibilities for Financial Controller. 

Essential Skills & Experience

  • 4+ years PQE ideally including experience in-house at a fast-paced fintech, financial services, or technology business.
  • Relevant accounting / tax qualification (ACA or equivalent)
  • Financial services experience (desirable)
  • Exposure to UK LLP / partnership tax matters (desirable)
  • UK and international tax experience
  • Experience using Netsuite (desirable)
  • Good IT skills, especially Excel
  • US tax (federal and sales tax) knowledge and/or experience (desirable)
  • Employment tax / IR35 knowledge /Payroll experience (desirable)

  • Hands-on approach.
  • Ability to work autonomously and manage a wide-ranging workload with competing priorities.
  • Commercially minded and pragmatic in applying tax and finance expertise to real-world business scenarios.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills; able to simplify complex financial and tax concepts for non-financial stakeholders.
  • High attention to detail, sound judgment, and resilience under pressure.
  • Comfortable in a fast-paced, high intensity environment.
