Partner 20, Social Media Lead, Crypto

United States (Remote)

Founded in Silicon Valley in 2009 by Marc Andreessen and Ben Horowitz, Andreessen Horowitz (aka a16z) is a venture capital firm that backs bold entrepreneurs building the future through technology. We are stage agnostic. We invest in seed to venture to growth-stage technology companies, across AI, bio + healthcare, consumer, crypto, enterprise, fintech, games, and companies building toward American dynamism. a16z has $100B+ under management across multiple funds.

We’ve established a team that is defined by respect for the entrepreneur and the company-building process; we know what it’s like to be in the founder’s shoes. Our team is at the forefront of new technology, helping founders and their companies impact and change the world.

a16z crypto aims to foster innovation, accelerate progress, and enable the crypto ecosystem to thrive in the U.S. — bringing the best of blockchains/crypto/decentralization to the world. (When we say “the best” of crypto, we mean the more productive, not purely speculative, uses of blockchains that can deliver on many benefits that people beyond the crypto industry want and need.) a16z crypto supports the crypto portfolio through engineering and security, go to market, regulatory and legal, research, talent and recruiting, as well as marketing — which includes an editorial content operation.

This is a rare opportunity at an established, prolific “direct media” operation — a model pioneered and proven by this team for over a decade at a16z — that has published influential industry reports, op-eds, builder playbooks, podcasts/videos, newsletters, and other content distributed on various platforms. The marketing team is composed of experienced brand marketers, top communications/ PR experts, designers, and editors coming from both established media outlets and in-house content marketing operations; the social media will cover all these marketing functions, while reporting into editorial.

The Role

The Social Media Lead is responsible for growing a16z crypto’s social channels, including engaging key communities across different audiences relevant to our industry. They will work closely with the crypto marketing team to (1) adapt and distribute existing content pieces into social media posts; and (2) help create content native to social media: clips, content campaigns, and more. This spans everything from social media for external podcast appearances/media interviews to investment announcements; to events and major industry conferences; to editorial content; to special projects, campaigns, and more.

This person will also advise the broader a16z crypto team (from investing to operations) — as well as our portfolio companies — in social media strategy and profile building.

This is a remote role (including on West Coast time), though occasional in-office presence will be required for regular team offsites, occasional conferences/events, and based on business needs.

To join our team, you should be excited to:

  • Build and strategize. You’re a doer who likes taking ideas to execution and is able to operationalize them into process, pipelines, and content calendars. But you’re not just good at the tactics: You’re also someone who is able to come up with fresh ideas — whether through collaboratively brainstorming with team members, proposing your own creative formats, or staying on top of the latest social media trends so you know which experiments to run and prioritize
  • Analyze and optimize. You’re data-driven, but also know how to trust your intuition and think big-picture. You (with us) will have hypotheses around content packages — and you will (working closely with our audience development lead) know how to test them, evaluate what’s working or not, and report back, so we build those learnings into our content programs
  • Create and produce. You’re able to directly create social content when needed, help produce it with others, and help oversee our short-form clips operation (leveraging our technical A/V editors and internal production person). This includes identifying, adapting, editing, and timing the right clips, so they’re compelling, engaging, and well-received on socials
  • Plugged in online. You’re on top of internet culture and the latest online conversations, monitor sentiment and “the current thing”, as well as track industry trends and shifts. You’re able to use this context to craft and tailor compelling, informative, and entertaining social media
  • Develop community and voice. You’re able to regularly engage with relevant social media communities and different audiences — as well as identify and engage key influencers across various crypto verticals/ domains. You would also be the online brand voice (and advocate for the industry) on behalf of a16z crypto

Minimum Qualifications

  • Excellent communicator — whether through text, multimedia, design, or memes
  • Hands-on experience owning or driving social media for a high-visibility or high-growth brand — past experience embedded in a content operation is especially welcome
  • Proven ability to adapt style and voice across different formats, platforms, and audiences — able to be playful, thoughtful, smart, accessible, direct… all while striking the right tone (not corporate, not cringe)
  • Experience with X, LinkedIn, Instagram, etc. required — and optionally, with crypto-native or alt social media tools and video (YouTube or TikTok)
  • Strong command of data — from implementing and using various analytics tools, to regularly interpreting and reporting insights
  • Ability to meet multi-threaded/ cross-functional deadlines
  • Passionate about technology, the internet, open source, and/or crypto — intellectually curious and always learning
  • Low ego, high empathy, and the capacity to collaborate effectively with diverse teams

The anticipated salary range for this role is between $199,000 - $232,000, actual starting pay may vary based on a range of factors which can include experience, skills, and scope.

This role is eligible to participate in the a16z carry program and various discretionary bonus programs as well as benefit and perquisite plans including health, dental, vision, disability, life insurance, 401K plan, vacation, and sick leave.

Form CC-305
OMB Control Number 1250-0005
Expires 07/31/2029

Why are you being asked to complete this form?

We are a federal contractor or subcontractor. The law requires us to provide equal employment opportunity to qualified people with disabilities. We have a goal of having at least 7% of our workers as people with disabilities. The law says we must measure our progress towards this goal. To do this, we must ask applicants and employees if they have a disability or have ever had one. People can become disabled, so we need to ask this question at least every five years.

Completing this form is voluntary, and we hope that you will choose to do so. Your answer is confidential. No one who makes hiring decisions will see it. Your decision to complete the form and your answer will not harm you in any way. If you want to learn more about the law or this form, visit the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) website at www.dol.gov/ofccp.
