Why We Need You!

We are seeking an experienced Cloud DBA Manager with expertise in SQL Server on Azure and AWS. The ideal candidate will have strong leadership skills, experience in managing cloud database operations, and the ability to drive database strategy in a cloud environment. In addition to SQL Server, experience with other RDBMS solutions like PostgreSQL and MySQL and NoSQL databases such as MongoDB, Elasticsearch, and Redis is highly desired.

What You Will Be Doing

  • Team Leadership: Lead and mentor a team of DBAs, fostering a high-performing culture. Work closely with the other DBA teams at Ivanti across geographies (U.S., India, Europe, etc.).
  • Database Management & Optimization: Manage, optimize, and ensure the performance, security, and availability of databases hosted on Azure and AWS.
  • Cloud Strategy & Implementation: Develop and implement strategies for cloud database architecture, migration, and automation.
  • Performance Tuning & Security: Conduct performance tuning, query optimization, and enforce security best practices.
  • Backup & Disaster Recovery: Implement robust backup and disaster recovery solutions for critical cloud-based database systems.
  • Collaboration & Stakeholder Management: Work closely with Engineering, Platinum Engineering, DevOps, SRE and Observability to ensure seamless database integrations and deployments.
  • Monitoring & Incident Management: Establish proactive monitoring and alerting mechanisms to ensure high availability and rapid incident response.
  • Innovation & Automation: Drive automation in database administration using Powershell, Python, Bash, or other automations.

To Be Successful in The Role, You Will Have

  • U.S. Citizen on U.S. Soil.
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
  • 10+ years of DBA experience with SQL Server in Azure and AWS.
  • 5+ years of leadership/managerial experience in a cloud database environment.
  • Expertise in high availability (HA) and disaster recovery (DR) solutions for SQL Server.
  • Hands-on experience with PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB, Elasticsearch, and Redis.
  • Proficiency in PowerShell, Python, or Bash for database automation.
  • Strong understanding of networking, security, and IAM in cloud environments.
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines, Kubernetes, and Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC).
  • Experience with database monitoring tools such as New Relic, Redgate, and SolarWinds Database Performance Analyzer (DPA) for performance tuning and issue detection.
  • Expertise in handling FedRAMP High and Impact Level 5 (IL5) compliance for cloud database environments, including:
    • Implementing and managing security controls required for FedRAMP High and IL5.
    • Ensuring compliance with federal security regulations and risk management frameworks.
    • Collaborating with security and compliance teams to prepare for FedRAMP audits and IL5 assessments.
    • Developing and maintaining documentation required for FedRAMP High and IL5 accreditation.
    • Direct experience with authorization processes and continuous monitoring.
    • Familiarity with security tools and automation techniques to maintain FedRAMP High and IL5 compliance.
    • Strong understanding of NIST 800-53 controls and their application to cloud database environments.
  • Participate in weekend shifts and on-call rotations.

Roadmap for Success

First 90 Days:

Onboarding & Understanding the Landscape:

  • Onboard with the Cloud DBA and SRE teams, understanding current database architecture, cloud strategy, and key stakeholders.
  • Review existing database policies, security protocols, backup strategies, and disaster recovery plans.

Stakeholder Engagement & Gap Analysis:

  • Establish relationships with cross-functional teams including Engineering, Platinum Engineering, SRE, DevOps, Observability, and Product Management.
  • Identify and document current database performance bottlenecks, operational inefficiencies, and security gaps.

Initial Optimization & Security Enhancements:

  • Lead initial meetings to discuss and set expectations for database optimization, automation, and migration initiatives.
  • Begin assessing and analysing current database operations, cloud cost management strategies, and compliance frameworks.

First 6 Months:

Performance Optimization & Automation:

  • Review existing monitoring and alerting systems for cloud databases.
  • Optimize database performance tuning and indexing strategies to enhance system efficiency.

Security & Compliance Alignment:

  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to develop and refine backup, disaster recovery, and high availability strategies.
  • Work towards aligning databases with FedRAMP High and IL5 compliance requirements.

Stakeholder Communication:

  • Provide regular status updates to senior management on key database projects and performance improvements.

Database Modernization Initiatives:

  • Plan and execute cloud database migrations/upgrades or modernization efforts where applicable.

First 12 Months:

Establishing a Best-in-Class Cloud Database Environment:

  • Achieve significant automation in database operations, reducing manual intervention.
  • Establish a fully optimized, secure, and cost-effective cloud database environment.

Advanced Security & Compliance Management:

  • Evaluate and enhance existing cloud cost management strategies and security frameworks.
  • Maintain continuous compliance monitoring for FedRAMP High and IL5.

Long-Term Innovation & Team Growth:

  • Lead a review of database policies, procedures, and training materials, ensuring alignment with industry best practices.
  • Monitor and track database performance, compliance adherence, and system security improvements.
  • Assess and recommend new technologies, certifications, and training programs for the DBA team to support ongoing innovation and scalability.

The pay range for this position at commencement of employment is expected to be between USD $150,000 and USD $175,000 per year.
