Our Solutions & AI Lab practice are looking for an experienced AWS Platform Engineer to join the team. Specifically, we're looking for an experienced software developer who wants to work in, or upskill into, platform engineering, supporting product, tooling and infrastructure builds.
Our Solutions & AI Labs (SAIL) practice focuses on helping clients control their data, turn them into actionable insights and better leverage them through the use of Machine Learning solutions directly embedded into businesses processes. We support clients across a number of industries and offer deep expertise in AI, ML, Cloud and Managed Solutions.
What you will be doing
You will be using your experience to help build and maintain internal and client solutions. You would be also responsible to support the growth of our team, helping them to build the skills they need to solve our client’s challenges. Depending on the level, you can be a part of our leadership team, shaping the direction of the practice, growing the business and leading our people.
Although we do not expect you to be an expert in all of the below activities at the same time, our team consists of people who can both work as advisors to our clients as well as being able to bring deep technical knowledge when needed. The profile of our typical engagements is a reflection of that.
This role supports both internal B2B solutions and external client projects, delivered either as a managed service hosted by us or deployed on client infrastructure.
Key responsibilities based on one of the below areas:
Developer Experience and the Internal Developer Platform
- Developer Experience First: Treat developers as your customers. Build the tools, services and self-service workflows that remove friction and accelerate delivery.
- Internal Developer Platform: Contribute to and extend our IDP Terraform modules, CLIs and tooling, owning versioning and backwards compatibility.
- Production Backend Development: Design, build, deploy and operate production APIs and services, from first commit through to live running.
- Release Engineering: Work with feature flags and trunk-based development, and co-ordinate releases across teams.
- Delivery Leadership: Break defined projects into features, user stories and tasks, map out deliverables, and coach junior engineers to do the same.
AI Platform Engineering
- AI Gateway: Build and operate a centralised, governed gateway for model access, routing, guardrails and cost control.
- Centralised AI Developer Platform: Provide the shared services and paved roads that let product teams ship AI features safely.
- Agents, Knowledge and Memory: Deliver Amazon Bedrock AgentCore agents, knowledge bases and memory into production.
- Platform, CI/CD and Infrastructure as Code
- CI/CD Systems: Design, develop and evolve modular CI/CD systems and reusable, extensible artifacts that other engineering teams build on.
- Infrastructure as Code: Write and maintain IaC and automate application deployment using industry-standard tools and services.
- Resilience and Operations: Design for high availability and disaster recovery, and define the monitoring, logging and alerting standards that go with it.
Security and Architecture
- Security by Design: Put security at the heart of every module you write and every architecture you design, with policies planned, enforced and compliant with industry standards.
- Solution Design: Translate functional and non-functional requirements into simple, robust architectures that comply with organisational strategy and standards.
Your skills and experience
We’re looking for experienced engineers who can support and bridge the gap between the developers and consultancy teams in which solve our clients most complex issues and bring their solutions to life.
- You are a ‘lifelong learner’, excited by solving complex client problems and committed to developing your own skills and the team around you.
- You lead from the front, owning and running engagements, interacting with stakeholders and making recommendations which shape the project.
- You have 5-7 years of hands on AWS delivery across Platform Engineering, Solution Design and Cloud Architecture, and separately 5-7 years as a working software developer in Python, Go or Java. This is a developer-first platform role: we are looking for engineers who write and ship software, not only engineers who configure it.
You will have a mix of technical skills including some of the below:
- Deep, hands on development experience in at least one backend language: Python, Go or Java, working as a backend developer rather than writing automation scripts and pipeline glue.
- You have designed, built and deployed production APIs and services, and supported them once live. You can talk us through something you shipped, the trade-offs you made and what broke.
- Hands on experience building and maintaining Internal Developer Platforms: contributing to the platform Terraform, CLI and tooling, and managing versioning and releases.
- Comfortable with feature flags and trunk-based development, and happy to co-ordinate releases across teams.
- Ability to design, build and evolve modular CI/CD templates and Infrastructure as Code that centralise governance and raise the quality bar for development teams.
- Security by default in the modules you create and the architectures you design, alongside high availability, disaster recovery and monitoring.
- Interest in, or experience of, building AI platform capability: AI gateways, centralised AI developer platforms, and Amazon Bedrock AgentCore agents, knowledge bases and memory.
- Able to define standards and defend your proposals when challenged by other architecture and security teams.
