Director, Asset Management
Headquartered in Toronto, the Canada Infrastructure Bank (CIB) is responsible for investing in new infrastructure projects. The CIB’s mission is to work with provincial, territorial, municipal, federal, Indigenous and private sector investor partners to transform the way infrastructure is planned, financed and delivered in Canada.
Based in Toronto and reporting to the Head, Asset Management, the Director, Asset Management, will oversee the day-to-day management of the CIB’s infrastructure investments to maximize value creation, while ensuring financial stability, regulatory compliance and sustainability. This role involves leading a multidisciplinary team, implementing asset management frameworks and collaborating with stakeholders to achieve long-term investment objectives.
The successful candidate will oversee the onboarding and monitoring of all of the CIB’s investments including loans, bonds and equity participations. The successful candidate will also be responsible for executing asset management strategies and plans, developing models and tools, and creating financially sustainable programs, standards and guidelines based on asset management best market practices.
Your responsibilities include
- Facilitate collaboration with other functional groups (e.g., Investments, Legal and Credit Risk teams) for non-routine activities including consents, waivers, amendments, remediation plans and restructurings
- Lead commercial discussions and negotiations on complex issues and high-risk items
- Drive the evaluation of investment performance, monitoring and reporting on the CIB’s assets
- Lead budgeting, forecasting and financial analysis for portfolio assets
- Collaborate with investment teams on acquisition due diligence and integration
- Ensure compliance with environmental, social and governance (ESG) standards
- Manage relationships with external partners, including borrowers, contractors and regulators
- Lead and inspire a growing, dedicated team responsible for executing asset management strategies, including designing and implementing an optimized team structure
- Champion the onboarding of new borrowers to ensure compliance with investment agreements, tailoring engagement based on borrower sophistication (from most sophisticated to first-time project finance and deal structures of project finance, corporate loans, etc.)
- Oversee the completion of quarterly and annual reporting on the CIB’s investment portfolio including presenting updates to the CIB Asset Management Committee
- Receive and assess owners’ reports for a variety of investments across several asset classes throughout Canada
- Manage construction draws (monthly or quarterly), loan repayment/investment returns, interest payments and liquidity forecasts with the CIB Finance Department
- Develop and implement asset management procedures and other team initiatives
Your ideal profile
- 10+ years of relevant experience in project finance, asset management, infrastructure investments, private equity, investment banking or corporate finance
- Undergraduate degree in finance, business, engineering, law or accounting
- Master’s degree is an asset
- CFA and/or CPA designation considered an asset
- Working knowledge of Canadian debt financing and capital markets and/or project financing markets, including reflection of these in a financial modelling and commercial document context
- Possesses strategic acumen with well-honed commercial sense
- Strong leadership and people-management skills
- Highly collaborative – can work effectively with various internal groups (e.g. Investments, Legal, Risk, Finance, etc.)
- Excellent organizational, interpersonal and communication skills (written & verbal) with well-honed relationship management experience
- Established track record as a hands-on, results-driven, energetic, creative and hardworking professional
- Detail-oriented and highly analytical
- Strong ownership mindset to get the job done and issues closed
- Bilingualism (French and English) is highly desirable
