Senior Software Engineer, Tax Engineering

Tax Engineering sits at the intersection of every trade, every payment, and every product Coinbase ships. When a user buys Bitcoin, sells an equity, earns staking rewards, or redeems an Advisor-managed strategy, Tax Engineering is in the critical path, calculating cost basis, tracking gain/loss, determining withholding obligations, and producing compliance reporting across every product line and legal entity globally. As a Senior Software Engineer on the Tax team within the Consumer & Business group, you'll build the extensible primitives that make each new Coinbase launch possible, where scale and accuracy are both non-negotiable.

What you'll do:

  • Own the design and delivery of backend systems for cost basis tracking, gain/loss calculation, withholding automation, and tax reporting infrastructure
  • Build new pipelines for broker reporting, automated withholding, and clearing integrations with partners as Coinbase expands into equities, margin, and options
  • Partner with Product, Design, Tax, Trading, and Positions teams to take ambiguous problems from scoping through production rollout
  • Drive an extensible tax architecture so every new product launch can plug into shared primitives without bespoke rework
  • Strengthen engineering quality through design reviews, code reviews, and technical mentorship across the team

Required Skills and Experience:

  • 6+ years of backend software engineering experience building and operating production systems with high-quality, well-tested code
  • Strong distributed systems fundamentals, with experience designing high-throughput services and data pipelines where correctness is critical
  • Track record owning complex systems end-to-end, from design through production operation, in fast-changing domains
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate closely with product, design, and cross-functional partners to translate ambiguous requirements into shipped solutions
  • Utilizes generative AI responsibly, maintaining human oversight to deliver business-ready outputs and drive measurable improvements in workflow efficiency, cost, and quality.
