Scientist, Avian Cell Engineering

Dallas, TX

The Scientist will develop novel media formulations to culture primordial germ cells (PGCs) from non-model organisms, conduct functional assays, and in vitro characterization of PGCs. The candidate will be part of an innovative synthetic biology platform that will develop and optimize a cell culture media platform for the production and expansion of PGCs with downstream assays to assess germline functionality from non-model avian species. This role supports Colossal’s avian program, establishing PGC lines to support conservation breeding and genetic rescue.

This position is based out of Dallas, TX, and may require some international travel. Relocation assistance is provided.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Innovate and execute experiments to culture primordial germ cells (PGCs) from non-model avian organisms
  • Using a dissection microscope, collect blood and tissue from avian embryos for use in cell line derivations.
  • Test novel PGC culture conditions, sort, screen, expand PGCs according to latest protocols and newly developed approaches, particularly as it relates to the germ cell lineage
  • Interpret scRNA-seq and rt-qPCR datasets and apply this data to develop novel media formulations tailored to specific avian species
  • Work with the Avian Embryology team to develop protocols for injection of PGCs into early-stage embryos
  • Own and deliver PGC derivation and culture milestones
  • Attend lab meetings, prepare reports and presentations on the progress of projects
  • Maintain detailed, accurate laboratory records and protocols

Required Skills and Abilities:

  • Expert knowledge of cell culture, primary cell derivation, and propagation methodologies, preferably with PGCs.
  • Previous experience optimizing growth media conditions for cell culture
  • Experience staging and manipulating avian embryos including injection into early-stage embryos
  • Experience in molecular biology (RNA extraction, qPCR)
  • Experience with rt-qPCR and flow cytometry

  • Ability to function well in a growth-oriented, nimble environment

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience deriving or culturing PGCs from avian species
  • Previous work optimizing media for challenging cell types

Education and Experience:

  • PhD in biological sciences, stem cell or germ cell biology, or related field.
  • Postdoctoral or industry experience in stem cell or germ cell biology.
