You’ll be part of a high-performing team that is responsible for all aspects of technical accounting, including researching complex transactions, providing strategic advice to partners, implementing accounting policies and process improvements and ensuring compliance with U.S. GAAP and SEC reporting standards. You’ll have high visibility, collaborating cross-functionally with Financial Reporting, Corporate Development, Legal, FP&A, Investor Relations, Tax and Accounting. This position reports to the Senior Director, Financial Reporting and Technical Accounting.

What You’ll Do:

  • Draft high-quality accounting memos and analyses to support management’s conclusions and obtain concurrence from external auditors, on topics such as business combinations, financing transactions, consolidation and joint ventures, investments, segment reporting, goodwill and intangible assets, derivatives and hedging, leases, stock-based compensation and internal-use software.
  • Evaluate and operationalize the accounting for complex, non-routine transactions, including equity offerings, convertible debt issuance and settlement, supplier financing and data center, GPU, power and colocation agreements, and provide timely, strategic guidance to business partners on the accounting impact of proposed transactions.
  • Review the accounting for material lease transactions, such as large data center and GPU arrangements, in partnership with the Accounting team, which owns lease accounting.
  • Review non-routine or unusual revenue arrangements as needed, in partnership with the Revenue Accounting team, which owns ASC 606 analyses.
  • Lead the accounting and valuation of M&A transactions and strategic investments, partnering with third-party specialists on purchase price allocations and fair value measurements.
  • Perform goodwill, long-lived asset and indefinite-lived intangible asset impairment analyses.
  • Develop and maintain certain accounting policies, ensuring they reflect current standards and industry best practices.
  • Monitor FASB and SEC rulemaking, proactively lead the implementation of new standards and regulations and partner with Accounting, Tax and FP&A to create SOX-compliant processes.
  • Serve as a primary technical accounting contact for external auditors during quarterly reviews and annual audits, coordinating the information and documentation needed to resolve technical matters.
  • Partner with Financial Reporting on technical accounting disclosures for quarterly and annual SEC filings, and support offering documents and related diligence for equity and debt financings as needed.
  • Review the statement of cash flows and the earnings per share calculations, including the impact of convertible debt and equity transactions, and support their preparation as needed.
  • Work with the Accounting team to ensure complex transactions are recorded accurately in the general ledger, reviewing key journal entries and supporting calculations.
  • Prepare clear, concise, executive-level materials, including technical accounting updates for senior leadership.
  • Design, document and execute management review controls over technical accounting areas, with clear evidence of review and support for significant inputs, while continuously strengthening controls and increasing automation.
  • Mentor, coach and develop junior accounting staff, and support ad hoc technical accounting requests and special projects as they arise.

What You’ll Add to DigitalOcean:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or a related field and an active CPA license
  • 8+ years of progressive technical accounting experience under U.S. GAAP, with significant exposure to financing arrangements (debt, equity and convertible instruments), consolidations, derivatives, stock-based compensation and business combinations; working knowledge of lease and revenue accounting sufficient to review material transactions
  • Public company experience, including SEC reporting and SOX 404 internal controls
  • Prior Big 4 audit or transaction advisory experience, or an equivalent in-house technical accounting role at a high-growth technology company; 4+ years at a Big 4 audit firm strongly preferred
  • Experience leading the accounting for financing and M&A transactions of meaningful size and complexity
  • Strong analytical skills, with the ability to critically evaluate valuation methodologies and assess complex security structures
  • Proven ability to build financial processes and internal controls from scratch in a fast-paced, evolving environment

  • Exceptional attention to detail, with developed self-review processes to produce error-free work products
  • Proficiency in financial modeling and comfort working across Excel, ERP systems (Oracle Fusion), Workiva and collaboration tools such as Google Suite
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities and drive projects to completion with minimal supervision
  • Preferred: experience with cloud, data center or AI infrastructure accounting
