Product Manager

San Jose, CA

About the role

Muon Space is hiring a Product Manager to own a defined slice of one of our larger product areas — for example, a specific capability within the spacecraft platform, part of the bits-to-ground data path, a workflow on our on-board high-performance compute stack, or a feature set tied to one of our instruments. You'll run the day-to-day product work for that area: discovery, requirements, prioritization, release coordination, and the feedback loop with customers and internal mission teams.

Reporting to a Director of Product or the VP of Product and working closely with senior PMs on the team, this is a Level 4 IC role. We're looking for someone with strong product fundamentals, real technical fluency, and the drive to grow their craft inside a hardware-plus-software environment. You will have meaningful ownership of your area from day one, with mentorship and air cover from more senior PMs on the decisions that extend beyond its boundaries.

This position is hybrid and requires working on-site in our San Jose, CA office three days per week.

Responsibilities

  • Area execution
    • Own the backlog, PRDs, and release planning for your product area; keep requirements, acceptance criteria, and open questions clear enough that engineering can execute without ambiguity.
    • Partner with engineering leads on scoping, sequencing, and trade-offs within each release; help the team make good calls on what to cut, defer, or simplify.
    • Track delivery, surface risks early, and keep stakeholders informed with crisp written updates.
    • Contribute to the roadmap for your area under the direction of the responsible senior PM or the VP of Product, bringing data, customer input, and your own point of view.
  • Discovery & customer understanding
    • Run customer and user interviews (external customers, internal mission teams, partners), synthesize what you hear, and turn it into concrete requirements and prioritization input.
    • Instrument your product, track usage and performance, and use evidence rather than opinion when making the case for what to build next.
    • Follow won/lost deals and customer escalations relevant to your area; feed structured observations back to the product and engineering teams.
  • Productization support
    • Contribute to productization decisions in your area — capability packaging, tiering, SLAs, documentation, deprecation — in partnership with the senior PM who owns the broader area.
    • Keep configuration control and change management clean for anything your area ships into production.
  • Cross-functional partnership
    • Work closely with engineering across software, hardware, and operations as a strong day-to-day product partner.
    • Support Go-To-Market teams with technical documentation, sales enablement material, RFP input, and customer demonstrations for your area.
    • Partner with Marketing on messaging and content tied to your area when needed.
    • Collaborate with the broader PM team on cross-area dependencies, shared conventions, and roadmap alignment.

Required Qualifications

  • 3–5 years of Product Management experience shipping technical products — ideally spanning software, hardware, or data systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate customer and user needs into clear requirements and acceptance criteria, and to drive them through to release.
  • Strong written communication: PRDs, decision memos, release notes, and status updates that are clear enough to act on.
  • Comfort working closely with engineers on technical trade-offs; able to read enough of a design doc or an API spec to ask the right questions.
  • Strong execution instincts: can run a backlog, keep a release on track, and know when to escalate.
  • Curiosity and willingness to grow inside a deep-tech domain; receptive to feedback and coaching from more senior PMs.
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, or a related technical field.

Nice-to-have Skills

  • Exposure to remote sensing, geospatial, Earth observation, or adjacent deep-tech data domains.
  • Familiarity with space systems and LEO constellations — spacecraft platforms, instruments, ground segment, or satellite data pipelines.
  • Experience with configuration control, change management, or safety-critical / mission-critical product environments.
  • Prior experience in a startup or high-growth technology environment.

Salary

The salary range for this role is $190,000 - $210,000, plus a competitive equity grant and comprehensive benefits package. Final compensation will be determined based on skills, qualifications, experience, and geographic location as assessed during the interview process.
