New Grad Software Engineer, Routing

Mountain View, California (HQ)

Who We Are

Nuro believes self-driving vehicles are the most immediate and profound opportunity for AI to drive positive change in the physical world. Safer streets, more time for what matters, and easier access to the world around us, that’s why we’re building a universal autonomy platform: self-driving for all roads and all rides.

Founded in 2016, Nuro is a physical AI company developing Level 4 autonomous driving technology for a wide range of vehicles, use cases, and markets. Powered by the Nuro Driver™, our universal autonomy platform enables the global mobility ecosystem to deploy autonomy at scale, from robotaxis and logistics fleets to personal vehicles.

With years of real-world deployment experience and a flexible, partner-led business model, Nuro is working toward a future where millions of autonomous vehicles powered by our technology help make everyday life safer, easier, and more connected. Nuro has raised over $2B in capital from Uber, NVIDIA, Google, Softbank, Fidelity, T. Rowe Price, and other leading investors.

About the Role

Product Engineering at Nuro spans the teams that build the software our vehicles, operators, and partners depend on every day, from the on-road experience of the fleet itself to the routing engine that decides where it goes.

  • The On-Road Experience team builds the internal tools and platform systems that Nuro's operations, engineering, and partner teams rely on to manage, monitor, and maintain our autonomous vehicle fleet. This is hands-on product engineering work at the intersection of fleet operations and software infrastructure. The systems you build directly impact user-facing features and how reliably & efficiently Nuro operates vehicles on public roads.
  • The Routing team builds the critical services that determine the routes our robots take to reach their destinations safely and efficiently, along with the simulation tools that shape the company's strategy for robot deployment and business expansion. The team is constantly working towards computing more efficient routes and providing more accurate ETAs.

As a Product Engineer, you'll join one of these teams and help build the products, tools, and services that turn Nuro's autonomy technology into a system people can operate, trust, and rely on.

About the Work

On-Road Experience

  • You will design, build, and ship full-stack applications using React, TypeScript, and modern web development practices.
  • You will develop backend services and APIs that integrate with onboard vehicle systems, cloud infrastructure, and external partner platforms.
  • You will build tools that enable fleet monitoring, vehicle health tracking, maintenance workflows, and operational decision-making.
  • You will contribute to frontend architecture decisions, component libraries, and shared platform patterns used across the org.

Routing

  • You will build and scale backend systems for the Routing team, including designing microservices, optimizing routing algorithms, and understanding road network graphs.
  • You will build software modules written in C++ that operate onboard the vehicle to generate routes, receive live map updates, and interface with motion planning.
  • You will build monitoring and analytics infrastructure that supports routing performance and ETA accuracy.
  • You will work on scalable traffic management and simulation tools that shape the company's strategy for robot deployment and business expansion.

Both Teams

  • You will work closely with Product, UX, Operations, and cross-functional stakeholders to define requirements and deliver new user experiences.
  • You will own features end-to-end: scoping, implementation, testing, deployment, and iteration based on user feedback.

About You

  • Technical excellence.
    • You have a strong foundation in software fundamentals: data structures, algorithms, and either web fundamentals (HTML, CSS, browser APIs) or server-side programming (Go, Java, Python, or C++).
    • You have experience (through coursework, internships, or personal projects) building applications with React and TypeScript, or building real-time, server-side systems.
    • You understand how to build and consume RESTful or gRPC APIs.
    • You are familiar with relational databases (e.g., PostgreSQL) and have some exposure to cloud infrastructure (GCP or AWS).
    • You are comfortable working across the stack, and eager to grow into whichever end of it your team needs most.
  • You have a wide range of technical interests, you love learning new technologies, and you're a quick learner.
  • You have a passion for making lives easier for the people who rely on your work, whether that's an operator troubleshooting a vehicle or a rider waiting on an accurate ETA.
  • You have the instinct for making the right tradeoffs. You know when it makes sense to move quick-and-dirty versus build the scalable approach, and you're eager to develop that judgment further.
  • You care about users. You like working closely with product and design to build the best experience for the people who depend on your work.
  • You are a great communicator, and you're excited to collaborate with PMs, UX researchers, other engineers, and cross-functional stakeholders on product requirements and designs.
  • You are impact-driven. You care deeply that your work makes a significant impact on the lives of millions of people.

Bonus Points

  • Familiarity with real-time data systems: WebSockets, Pub/Sub, streaming pipelines.
  • Experience with Protocol Buffers and gRPC, or RPC frameworks like Thrift.
  • Exposure to Kubernetes, CI/CD pipelines, or infrastructure-as-code.
  • Experience with routing algorithms, map data, or graph data structures.
  • Background or coursework in the autonomous vehicle, robotics, logistics, or automotive industry.
  • Experience working with partner or third-party API integrations.
  • Interest in frontend platform work: design systems, shared component libraries, and developer tooling.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field, completed or in progress (new grad / early-career candidates welcome, no professional experience required).

At Nuro, your base pay is one part of your total compensation package. For this position, the reasonably expected base pay range is between $132,300 and $198,450 for the level at which this job has been scoped.
