Machine Learning & Robotics Internship 2027

Columbus, Ohio

Build the Path Forward

At Path Robotics, we’re attacking a trillion dollar opportunity — doing things that have never been done before to support an industry hurting from a lack of skilled labor. Big, hard problems are what Path tackles every day, and our people are our greatest asset to get that job done. Our intelligent, hardworking team does the impossible every single day, yet remains incredibly kind, humble, and always ready to support one another.

We’re looking for a Machine Learning & Robotics Intern to spend 12 weeks next spring or summer building real software for robots that sense, plan, and act. Whether your background leans toward robotics (planning, control, kinematics) or machine learning (perception, reinforcement learning, deep learning), we’ll match you with a project that fits your strengths — and you’ll see your code run on live robotic cells doing real work. You’ll be paired with a mentor and work alongside our Robotics and Weld Intelligence teams from day one.

What You’ll Do

Every intern owns a scoped, production-relevant project from design through testing on real hardware, then presents results to the team at the end of the summer. Depending on your interests, your project could include:

  • Robotics: motion and trajectory planning, inverse kinematics and reachability, real-time control and feedback loops, visual servoing, or localization and navigation for mobile platforms.
  • Machine learning: vision-based perception, reinforcement learning or imitation learning for motion and control, learned planners, or sim-to-real training in tools like Isaac Sim, MuJoCo, or Gazebo.
  • Robot learning: behavioral cloning, diffusion policies, or vision-language-action (VLA) models for manipulation, trained on multi-modal data such as images, force, and torque.
  • Where they meet: combining classical robotics with learning-based methods to make our robots faster, smarter, and more capable.

Who You Are

You don’t need to be an expert in both robotics and ML — depth in one and curiosity about the other is what we’re after.

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Ph.D. in Robotics, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field.
  • Strong programming skills in C++ and/or Python.
  • Coursework, research, or project experience in robotics (planning, controls, kinematics, dynamics) or machine learning (computer vision, deep learning, reinforcement learning).
  • For robot learning projects: coursework or research in imitation learning, reinforcement learning, or diffusion-based policies, ideally applied to robot manipulation.
  • Comfortable working on Linux and using Git.
  • You learn fast, enjoy debugging hard problems, and can explain your work clearly to people outside your specialty.

Why You’ll Love It Here

  • Real ownership: your project ships to robots doing real production work, not a sandbox.
  • A dedicated mentor plus regular time with engineers across robotics, ML, and hardware.
  • Daily free lunch to keep you fueled and connected with the team.
  • Competitive hourly pay.

As a government contractor subject to the Vietnam Era Veterans Readjustment Assistance Act (VEVRAA), we request this information in order to measure the effectiveness of the outreach and positive recruitment efforts we undertake pursuant to VEVRAA. Classification of protected categories is as follows:

A "disabled veteran" is one of the following: a veteran of the U.S. military, ground, naval or air service who is entitled to compensation (or who but for the receipt of military retired pay would be entitled to compensation) under laws administered by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs; or a person who was discharged or released from active duty because of a service-connected disability.

A "recently separated veteran" means any veteran during the three-year period beginning on the date of such veteran's discharge or release from active duty in the U.S. military, ground, naval, or air service.

An "active duty wartime or campaign badge veteran" means a veteran who served on active duty in the U.S. military, ground, naval or air service during a war, or in a campaign or expedition for which a campaign badge has been authorized under the laws administered by the Department of Defense.

An "Armed forces service medal veteran" means a veteran who, while serving on active duty in the U.S. military, ground, naval or air service, participated in a United States military operation for which an Armed Forces service medal was awarded pursuant to Executive Order 12985.
