Title: Senior Systems Engineer

Location: Washington, DC (Onsite)

Terms: Full-time

Salary: 150k - 180k DOE

Clearance: Top Secret with SCI eligibility - Required

Travel: <10%

About the role

We are seeking a highly experienced and technically proficient Senior Systems Engineer to manage, optimize, and secure critical enterprise infrastructure at the Dept of State in Washington, DC. The ideal candidate will be a hands-on expert in Windows Server, Active Directory, and virtualization technologies, with a strong focus on automation and cloud adoption. This role requires deep technical troubleshooting skills and the ability to work in a secure, on-site environment.

 What You’ll Do

  • Own Windows Server/Active Directory (AD) Services (GPO, DNS/DHCP, OU design, patching, monitoring) across production enclaves, ensuring high availability and optimal performance.
  • Design, implement, and manage enterprise virtualization platforms, primarily using VMware ESXi, for maximum efficiency and resource utilization.
  • Automate infrastructure deployment, configuration, and maintenance at scale using PowerShell and other scripting languages (e.g., Python), focusing on IaC (Infrastructure as Code) principles.
  • Architect, deploy, and manage Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) solutions and oversee certificate/TLS lifecycle management across the enterprise.
  • Perform complex, end-to-end troubleshooting of infrastructure issues, covering networking (TCP/IP, routing, load balancing), identity (Kerberos/LDAP), and application integration.
  • Document runbooks, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and change procedures; participate in scheduled change windows and on-call rotation.
  • Contribute to cloud strategy and migration efforts by providing technical expertise for AWS and/or Azure platform integration.
  • Ensure systems adhere to stringent security requirements (e.g., STIG/RMF/NIST), especially within federal or classified environments.

 What You Bring (Required Qualifications)

  • Active Top Secret with SCI(active or cross-over-eligible).
  • Bachelor’s in computer science, Information Technology, or related field — or equivalent practical experience.
  • 10+ years Server administration
  • Proficiency in PowerShell for complex administration, reporting, and automation.
  • Extensive experience with virtualization platforms (ESXi, Hyper-V, or KVM), including Horizon Remote Assistance.
  • Experience with VDI deployments.
  • Hands-on experience with Solarwinds for enterprise IT infrastructure and environment monitoring.
  • Experience with Active Directory in production environments.

We Value (Differentiators)

  • Experience managing and configuring MS Exchange environments.
  • Deep understanding of networking fundamentals (TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, routing protocols) and experience with load balancers (e.g., F5/NetScaler).
  • Proven experience in designing and managing PKI and handling the entire certificate lifecycle.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a proven ability to document complex systems.
  • Background in AWS and/or Azure infrastructure, services, and best practices.
  • Familiarity with security compliance frameworks and tools for federal/classified environments (STIG, RMF, NIST).
  • Experience with enterprise monitoring solutions (e.g., SCOM, Splunk, health sets) is a plus.
  • Exposure to Microsoft 365 (M365) technologies, including Hybrid/M365 touchpoints (e.g., Modern Auth, EOP/Defender).
