Data Ops Engineer Intern

Cheshire, Connecticut, United States; Jersey City, New Jersey, United States

Overview:

If you're looking for the stability of a profitable, growing company with the entrepreneurial spirit of a startup, we’re hiring. SageSure, a leader in catastrophe-exposed property insurance, is seeking a DataOps Engineer Intern to join our Rising Pioneer Program and support the Product Development team. Over the course of this 10-week program, interns will gain hands-on experience, learn from knowledgeable professionals, and contribute to projects that support real business needs.

In this role, you will help update and validate data queries, compare results between legacy and updated processes, and assist with documentation that makes actuarial data workflows easier to understand and maintain.

This internship is a good fit for a student interested in data, analytics, insurance, or technology who is eager to learn, detail-oriented, and comfortable working with business and technical partners.

What you’d be doing:

  • Learn how actuarial data is gathered, prepared, validated, and used to support business decisions.
  • Assist with rewriting, updating, and testing existing SQL queries as data sources and platforms evolve.
  • Compare results from updated queries to prior outputs and help identify differences in counts, premiums, exposures, losses, or other key measures.
  • Support basic data quality checks, including missing values, duplicate records, unexpected results, and changes over time.
  • Document data sources, business rules, query logic, and recurring processes in a clear and organized way.
  • Partner with actuaries, data scientists, and data professionals on ad hoc projects and process improvements.
  • Receive coaching, mentoring, and feedback while building practical technical and business communication skills.

We’re looking for someone who has:

  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program in Computer Science, Data Science, Statistics, Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Information Systems, Engineering, or a related quantitative field.
  • An anticipated graduation date in 2027 or 2028.
  • Coursework or project experience using SQL.
  • Exposure to R, Python, or another data analysis tool.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and reasoning skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and a willingness to ask questions when results do not look right.
  • Ability to communicate clearly with technical and non-technical partners.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Authorization to work in the United States.

Highly preferred candidates also have:

  • Prior internship, class project, or work experience involving data, analytics, reporting, or databases.
  • GPA of 3.0 or higher.
  • Familiarity with relational databases or data quality concepts.
  • Interest in property and casualty insurance, actuarial analytics, finance, risk analytics, or data operations.
  • Exposure to Git, cloud data platforms, or modern data warehouse environments.
